Chapter 3 - THE THIRD MAN

Before James's fingers could close around the grip of the micro-pistol hidden inside his tailored pocket, Marcus was already moving.

Marcus didn't just step forward; he brought his heavy leather-shod boot down directly onto James’s wrist.

A sickening snap resonated through the grand foyer, followed instantly by James’s high-pitched, agonized scream. Marcus kicked the exposed steel of the small caliber pistol across the smooth floor, sending it spinning into the dark corner beneath the grand mahogany staircase.

"Did you really think we came here alone, James?" Marcus asked, his boot keeping firm pressure on James’s crushed wrist.

Outside the heavy double doors, the night air was suddenly cut by the sharp, high-pitched wail of multiple police sirens winding their way up the private estate drive. Red and blue lights began to strobe through the tall frosted glass panels, casting grotesque, dancing shadows across the pristine white walls of the hall.

Lily knelt beside James, bringing her face inches from his bruised, bloodied cheek. The scent of crushed lilies clung to her skin—a scent he realized with a sudden terror wasn't perfume, but the actual flowers blooming in the estate garden outside.

"You thought you were the architect of this family, James," Lily whispered into his ear, her breath warm against his frozen skin. "You thought by isolating Maya, by telling her I was dead, you could control the Vane inheritance until she turned eighteen. But you forgot one thing."

"What..." James gasped, tears of agony streaming down his face as Marcus applied more weight to his arm.

"I built the security systems in this house," Lily said softly. "I know where every camera is hidden. I know where every micro-microphone is routed. And for the past thirty minutes, every word you've spoken—every confession, every threat—has been broadcast live to the police tactical unit sitting at the bottom of the driveway."

The double doors were slammed open once more, but this time it wasn't a solitary figure.

Six heavily armed officers from the Oslo Special Operations Command flooded into the hall, their tactical boots heavy on the marble, their laser sights painting bright red dots across James’s blue tuxedo.

"Hands where we can see them! On the ground! Don't move!" an officer screamed, his voice amplified by the enclosed marble space.

Marcus stepped back, pulling Maya gently behind his body to shield her from the pointed weapons. Lily stood up smoothly, smoothing down the front of her beige trench coat with complete, unbothered composure.

James lay flat on his stomach, his face pressed against the icy stone floor. Blood from his torn mouth stained the white marble beneath him, mixing with the dust and dirt brought in from the storm outside. He looked up through his blurred vision, seeing his reflection in the polished stone.

He was no longer the master of Blackwood Manor. He was a prisoner inside his own cage.

As the officers pinned his arms behind his back and snapped the cold steel handcuffs around his wrists, James kept his eyes locked on Lily.

"It isn't over," James hissed through his broken teeth as they hoisted him off the floor. "You think you're free of me, Lily? You think he's going to let you keep her?"

Lily didn't answer. She reached out, took Maya’s small hand into her own, and turned her back on him, walking away into the warm, illuminated depths of the estate while the police dragged James out into the freezing night.
