Chapter 1 - The Cold Pour of Velvet

The grand banquet hall of the Grand Sovereign Hotel hummed with the sickening, gilded chatter of three hundred high-society guests. Towering crystal chandeliers hung from high ceilings, casting warm, honey-colored light across velvet curtains, ice sculptures, and long tables draped in pristine linen. It was an environment designed for ultimate opulence, where million-dollar business mergers were sealed over vintage wine and where the poor were kept behind heavy, soundproof oak doors.
Yet, near the central catering station, the atmosphere shattered into frozen cruelty.
Cowering beside a polished brass service cart was seven-year-old Maya. Her small, trembling frame was clad in a simple, faded tan cotton dress. Her hair, normally soft dark curls, was wet and matted against her pale forehead. In her small hands, she clutched a half-eaten dry bread roll—a discarded leftover she had retrieved from a busing tray to quiet the gnawing ache in her stomach. Tears ran down her reddened cheeks, mixing with the water dripping from her chin.
Standing directly over her was Victoria Vance.
At forty-eight, Victoria was a woman whose vanity was matching only by her sociopathic ruthlessness. She wore a sparkling, beaded sheer gown that shimmered like crushed diamonds under the chandeliers. Her blonde hair was styled into an immaculate bun, and her throat was encased in a choker of south-sea pearls. In her right hand, she held a silver metal pitcher, leaning forward with an expression of pure, unadulterated disgust.
Victoria tilted the silver pitcher further, letting a steady, ice-cold stream of water cascade directly over Maya’s upturned face.
"I'll teach you not to steal," Victoria purred, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper that carried across the immediate service radius.
Maya gasped, her small body convulsing under the icy shock. "I was hungry..." she sobbed, her breath coming in ragged, terrified gasps as she tried to shield the piece of bread with her elbows.

Victoria didn't hesitate. With a violent strike of her palm, she slapped the bread roll out of the little girl's hands, sending it bouncing across the pristine marble floor.
"Get this filthy child out!" Victoria barked, turning her head toward a uniformed hotel security officer standing near the brass doors. She pointed her manicured finger down at the shivering child like a monarch ordering an execution. "She's a thief! She belongs in a cell!"
