Chapter 5 - The Shadow of the Past

Two miles away, inside a small, dimly lit two-room apartment above a dry-cleaning shop, Elena sat on the edge of a worn mattress.
The room smelled of old paper, lavender oil, and wet wool. Maya lay tucked under three layers of heavy blankets, her small face pale, sleeping fitfully as a warm hum from a portable space heater filled the room.
Elena sat at a small wooden desk, a desk lamp casting a pale yellow light over a rusted metal lockbox she had pulled from beneath the floorboards.
She opened the box with a small silver key worn around her neck.
Inside lay three fake passports, a thick stack of outdated cash, and a small, leather-bound notebook filled with handwritten ledger entries, security access codes, and corporate serial numbers.
On the inside cover of the notebook was a photograph taken eight years ago: Elena, younger and smiling, standing in a high-tech laboratory next to a man in an expensive navy suit—Julian Vance.
Elena ran her fingers over the photograph.
Seven years ago, Elena hadn't been a waitress at the Grand Sovereign. She had been Dr. Elena Rostova, the chief bio-data analyst for Vance International. She had discovered that Julian Vance was using his commercial security network to harvest private data on city officials, laundering money through offshore shell accounts registered to his wife, Victoria.
When Elena tried to go to the federal authorities, Julian had framed her for corporate espionage, seized her life savings, and hunted her across three states. She had faked her identity, taking minimum-wage kitchen jobs to stay beneath the radar and keep Maya safe.

She had thought staying quiet, staying humble, and enduring the humiliation of the lower class would protect her daughter.
She had been wrong. Cruelty was not satisfied by submission; it was fed by it.
