Chapter 2 - The Arc of Violence

Evelyn did not pause to process the impossibility of what she was seeing. She did not ask questions. A primal, instinctual fury swept through her veins, scorching away every trace of hesitation or domestic propriety.
She charged across the beige tile floor, her denim-clad legs moving with terrifying speed.
Clara barely had time to turn her head, her thin lips parting in mild surprise, before Evelyn reached out with a frantic, trembling hand and ripped the leather leash directly from the older woman's grip. The force of the snatch jerked Clara's arm forward, throwing her off balance.
"Get your filthy hands off my daughter!" Evelyn roared, her face contorted into a mask of pure, unadulterated rage.
Before Clara could steady herself or articulate a defense, Evelyn swung her right arm back and delivered a brutal, full-force open-handed slap across Clara's cheek.
SNAP.
The sound echoed off the hard white cabinetry like a pistol shot.
The sheer momentum of the strike turned Clara's head violently to the side. Her short gray hair whipped wildly around her face, her silver earrings jangling as she stumbled backward, her orthopedic shoes slipping on the slick floor tiles. She crashed hard against the lower kitchen cabinets, clutching her left cheek, which was already blooming into a violent, angry red contusion.
"You psychotic old hag!" Evelyn spat, dropping to her knees on the cold floor and pulling Lily into her arms. She frantically unbuckled the leather collar from her daughter's neck, throwing the heavy metal buckle across the room where it struck the baseboards with a metallic clank. "What did you do to her?! What did you do?!"
Lily buried her face into the curve of Evelyn's neck, her small body shaking violently as she let out a piercing, ragged cry. "Mommy! Mommy!"
Clara remained slumped against the cabinetry, her breathing heavy, her dark eyes wide with shock. But even as pain radiated across her jaw, her expression slowly shifted from surprise back into a terrifying, cold condescension. She touched her swollen cheek with two fingers, looking up at Evelyn with absolute disdain.

"You have no respect, Evelyn," Clara rasped, her voice trembling slightly, though her eyes remained hard as flint. "You never did. You don't understand how a proper family is raised."
"I am taking my child and leaving this house forever!" Evelyn cried out, tears of rage spilling down her face as she wrapped her arms tightly around Lily's waist, preparing to push herself up off the floor.
