Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of Ethan Vance

The silence that followed the camera's alarm was far more terrifying than the shouting that had preceded it.
Ethan moved first. He reached up, tearing at the top button of his white shirt as if he were suddenly suffocating. The cold, calculated demeanor of the corporate executive shattered, replaced by the frantic, wide-eyed twitching of a trapped animal.
"Who turned that on?!" Ethan roared, turning violently on Clara. "Mother! Did you touch the security panel in the hallway?!"
"I didn't touch anything!" Clara protested, her hands shaking as she backed away toward the kitchen island. "You said the system was disconnected! You swore to me the feed went nowhere!"
Evelyn took three slow, deliberate steps backward toward the kitchen's rear doorway, her eyes scanning the room for any sign of an exit. Lily held on tight around her neck, her small heart hammering against Evelyn's ribs.
"The system was disconnected," Evelyn said softly, her voice carrying a newfound, razor-sharp clarity. She looked at Ethan, watching him unravel. "Unless someone else rewired it. Someone who knew what you were doing in this house."
Ethan snapped his head toward Evelyn, his mouth working silently before a dark, desperate sneer took over his face.
"Give me the girl, Evelyn," Ethan commanded, taking a heavy step toward her. "Give her to me right now. We are going upstairs, and we are going to fix this before anyone sees."
"Don't touch us!" Evelyn yelled, backing out of the kitchen threshold into the wide hardwood hallway.
"You're not leaving!" Ethan shouted, charging forward.
He reached for Evelyn's arm, his large hand grasping at the fabric of her blue shirt. But Evelyn was faster. Driven by pure survival instinct, she swung her heavy leather purse—still hanging from her shoulder—with all her strength, striking Ethan directly across the bridge of his nose.

Ethan cried out, stumbling backward as blood burst from his nostrils, staining the front of his pristine white shirt.
Evelyn didn't wait to see him fall. She turned on her heel and ran down the hallway toward the front door as fast as her legs could carry her.
