Chapter 4 - The Child's Confession

Evelyn felt the ground beneath her dissolve. A terrifying, cold realization began to creep into her mind, darkening the edges of her vision.
"Disciplining her?" Evelyn whispered, her voice cracking with sheer disbelief. "Ethan... this isn't discipline. This is torture. She's three years old!"
"She needs to learn obedience," Ethan replied, taking a step closer, his shoe coming down inches from Evelyn's knee. "My mother raised me with order and respect. You will not undermine her authority in this house."
Lily, still clinging frantically to Evelyn's light blue shirt, pulled her face away from her mother's neck. Her small face was red, her big brown eyes filled with an unbearable, adult weight of sorrow and fear. She looked up at her father's cold, imposing figure, then tightened her tiny fingers around Evelyn's collar.
"Mommy..." Lily whimpered, her raspy voice cutting through the heavy tension of the room.
Evelyn lowered her head, pressing her cheek against Lily's soft forehead. "It's okay, baby. Mommy's here. Mommy's got you."
Lily shook her head frantically, her small frame quivering as she leaned closer to Evelyn's ear. She didn't whisper; her voice carried clearly across the quiet, tiled room.
"Daddy told her to do that," Lily sobbed out, pointing a tiny, shaking finger at Ethan.
Ethan's posture stiffened instantly.
"What did you say, sweetie?" Evelyn breathed, her blood turning to ice.
"Daddy told her to do that," Lily repeated, her big eyes brimming with fresh tears as she looked back and forth between her parents. "Daddy used to do that to me... when you went to work."
The room plunged into an absolute, suffocating silence.
Evelyn felt as though all the air had been violently sucked out of her lungs. The bright, warm sun filtering through the kitchen window felt mockingly artificial. She looked up slowly at Ethan, her eyes wide with a horrific, sickening comprehension.

Ethan didn't move. He stood perfectly still, his white shirt blindingly bright under the ceiling lights, his handsome face frozen in a terrifying, impassive mask. Beside him, Clara slowly lowered her hand from her bruised cheek, a thin, knowing smile touching the corners of her lips.
"You..." Evelyn whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the refrigerator. "You ordered her to do this... You've been doing this to her all along..."
