Chapter 5 - The Watching Eye

Before Ethan could utter a single word of denial, a sharp, metallic sound shattered the silence of the room.

BEEP.

It was a high-pitched, electronic pulse that echoed clearly off the hard white surfaces of the kitchen.

BEEP. BEEP.

Evelyn snapped her head up. Ethan's head jerked back. Even Clara's smug composure vanished as her eyes darted nervously toward the ceiling.

Mounted directly in the corner of the room, positioned high above the top line of the white cabinets, was a sleek, black dome security camera.

It was a device Evelyn had never noticed before—a piece of hardware subtly integrated into the ceiling trim, almost completely hidden by the warm ambient light. But now, a bright, pulsing red LED light was blinking frantically from behind its dark glass lens.

BEEP. BEEP. BEEP.

The camera emitted a steady, rhythmic warning tone, its internal mechanism making a tiny, mechanical whirring sound as the lens adjusted, zooming in directly on the three adults and the child standing in the center of the kitchen floor.

Evelyn stared up at the blinking red light, her mind racing at breakneck speed.

She hadn't installed that camera. Ethan had always claimed the house was completely unmonitored, insisting that privacy was the highest priority in their gated community. Yet there it was—active, recording, and transmitting.

Ethan's face went completely pale. For the first time since he had stepped into the room, the absolute control he projected cracked, revealing a deep, terrifying panic beneath the surface. He took a sudden step back, his eyes fixed on the blinking red lens.

"Ethan..." Clara whispered, her voice suddenly laced with genuine fear as she pulled back from her son. "Is that... is that live?"

Evelyn slowly stood up from the floor, clutching Lily securely against her chest. She didn't look at Ethan. She kept her eyes locked on the ceiling camera, watching the red light pulse like a dark, mechanical heart.

Whoever was watching that feed had just seen everything. The leash. The slap. The confrontation.

And the child's confession.
