Chapter 1 - The Golden Cage

The grand ballroom of the Grand Regent Hotel hummed with the suffocating, highly curated opulence of the city’s highest social tier. Beneath a massive, hand-cut crystal chandelier that cast warm, amber reflections across the polished marble floor, white-gloved waiters drifted between clusters of billionaires, politicians, and socialites. The air was thick with the scent of costly French perfume, expensive cigars, and the subtle, metallic stench of unspoken malice.
Victoria Sterling adjusted her diamond teardrop earrings, her manicured fingers brushing past the silk collar of her crimson off-the-shoulder gown. At thirty-two, Victoria was the undisputed queen of the local aristocracy—flawless blonde hair pulled into a severe, elegant updo, pale blue eyes sharp enough to cut glass, and a heart constructed entirely of calculation. Today was supposed to mark the official announcement of her engagement to Arthur Vance, the elusive venture capitalist whose family controlled the city’s vast port logistics empire.
Yet, as Victoria held a heavy crystal flute filled with freshly squeezed orange juice, her gaze drifted down toward the foot of the main banquet table.
Standing beside a tall floral arrangement was a three-year-old child.
The girl wore a simple, cream-colored organza dress that lacked the designer labels worn by the other guests. Her light blonde hair was tied into small pigtails, and her large, innocent green eyes looked around the towering hall with wide-eyed wonder. She reached out her small, chubby hand toward a gilded tray of pastries sitting on the edge of the mahogany table, holding out her little palms as if waiting for a piece.
Victoria’s blue eyes narrowed into slits of pure, concentrated disdain. To anyone else, the toddler was the picture of innocent childhood. To Victoria, the girl was a walking biohazard to her social ascension. The child, whose name was Maya, had been brought to the gala by a low-level catering supervisor—a woman Victoria had explicitly ordered to keep out of sight in the service corridors.
"Look at it," Victoria whispered under her breath, her voice cold and raspy. "A stray dog wandering into a palace."
She took three slow, deliberate steps toward the toddler. Her high heels clicked against the marble floor like the steady countdown of a bomb. The surrounding guests, sensing the sudden drop in temperature, began to quiet down, their conversations fading into curious whispers.
Victoria stopped directly above the little girl. Shadows cast by the massive chandelier stretched across Maya's cream dress.
Maya looked up, her innocent face lighting up with a small, shy smile as she saw the bright red gown and the sparkling diamond necklace. "Pretty lady..." the toddler squeaked softly, reaching her tiny, outstretched hands higher.
Victoria didn't smile back. Her lips curved into a cold, contemptuous sneer.
"This is not where you belong," Victoria said. Her voice was not a shout, but a low, chilling whisper that cut straight through the ambient string quartet music.

Without a second's hesitation, Victoria tilted her wrist.
The heavy crystal flute tipped forward. A thick, bright stream of sticky, cold orange juice poured directly off the glass rim, splashing straight over the little girl's head.
