Chapter 9 - The Trial of Public Opinion

By sunrise, the story of the "Orange Juice Assault" had completely consumed the national news cycle.
Every major television network, tabloid magazine, and social media platform featured the high-definition footage captured from the Regent Ballroom. Millions of viewers watched in horrified shock as the glamorous heiress in the crimson dress cold-heartedly poured a full glass of sticky orange juice over the innocent toddler, followed by the dramatic entrance of Alexander Vance and the physical collapse of the Sterling dynasty.
Outside the Central Magistrate Courthouse downtown, hundreds of reporters, news vans, and angry protesters had gathered behind metal barricades. Protesters held signs depicting crossed-out glasses of orange juice and slogans demanding the maximum prison sentence for Victoria Sterling.
Inside the courthouse holding area, Victoria sat on a cold steel bench inside a damp cell.
Her crimson dress was crumpled, stained, and ruined. Her expensive blonde updo had completely fallen apart, hanging in greasy strands around her pale, haggard face. The diamond teardrop earrings had been confiscated by prison guards, replaced by a cheap plastic identification wristband.
Her high-priced defense attorney, a silver-haired litigator named Edward Cross, stood outside the cell bars, holding a leather briefcase with hands that were visibly shaking.
"Cross!" Victoria shrieked, scrambling off the bench and grabbing the steel bars. Her eyes were bloodshot, surrounded by dark circles of mascara and sleep deprivation. "Get me out of here! Post the bail! My father has millions in the Cayman accounts!"
"Victoria, shut up and listen to me," Cross hissed in a desperate whisper, looking around the corridor. "The Cayman accounts were frozen two hours ago by the Department of Justice! Your father is currently being questioned by federal prosecutors regarding tax evasion and corporate fraud!"
Victoria’s breath hitched. "What?! That's impossible! Alexander can't do that!"
"Alexander Vance owns the DOJ task force chief, Victoria!" Cross barked, pressing his face against the bars. "You didn't just pour juice on a random child! You assaulted the sole heir to a forty-billion-dollar empire! The District Attorney is treating this as a high-profile hate crime against a minor! They are offering zero plea bargains!"
Victoria collapsed backward onto the hard steel bench, her hands flying to her head as she let out a low, pathetic wail of absolute despair. "It was just juice... it was just a glass of juice!"
"It was never about the juice, Victoria," Cross said, his voice dropping into a somber, hollow tone. "It was about the fact that you showed the entire world who you truly were behind your diamonds. And the world hates you for it."
The cell door suddenly screeched open.

Two stern-faced female corrections officers stepped inside, holding steel wrist restraints.
"Victoria Sterling," the lead officer commanded coldly. "Arraignment court is in session. Stand up."
