THE ORANGE JUICE BLOSSOM / Chapter 2 / 15

Chapter 2 - Liquid Venom

The citrus liquid drenched Maya's light blonde pigtails instantly, matting them against her forehead. The dark orange juice trickled down her pale cheeks, splashing across the delicate cream organza of her dress and leaving a massive, sticky brown-orange stain across her chest.

For a terrifying second, the child didn't make a sound. Her large green eyes opened wide in sheer, unadulterated shock, frozen as the icy juice dripped into her eyes and off her chin.

Then, the psychological reality of the assault set in.

Maya covered her wet face with both of her hands, her tiny frame shivering violently as a loud, agonizing sob tore from her throat. She sank to her knees on the cold marble, weeping bitterly as sticky juice dripped from her fingertips onto the polished floor.

Around the banquet table, a wave of visible discomfort rippled through the gathered crowd. Several women gasped, holding their hands to their mouths. Men shifted uncomfortably in their tuxedos, looking away or staring at their polished shoes. Yet, no one moved. No one stepped forward. In the hyper-exclusive world of the Sterling family, challenging Victoria meant social and financial suicide.

Victoria stood over the crying child, holding the empty crystal flute by its delicate stem. She didn't display a single shred of remorse; her face remained a mask of arrogant triumph. She crossed her arms, looking down at the shivering toddler as if she were nothing more than a spilled glass of wine on an expensive rug.

"Learn your place," Victoria murmured, her voice dripping with venom. "Someone fetch a janitor to scrub this filth off the floor."

Beside the main pillars, a man in a dark grey suit—a mid-level investment banker named David Chen—watched the scene with his fists clenched so tightly his knuckles turned white. David wasn't part of the Sterling inner circle; he was a former military veteran who had built his firm from nothing. He had spent the evening watching Victoria manipulate the room, but this act of casual, aristocratic cruelty broke something inside him.

David didn't calculate the consequences. He didn't think about his firm's line of credit or the Sterling influence.

He broke away from the crowd, his heavy dress shoes pounding against the marble as he sprinted across the ballroom floor straight toward Victoria.

"This is a child!" David roared, his voice booming off the vaulted ceiling like a thunderclap. "How can you be this cruel?!"

Before Victoria could even turn her head, David slammed his shoulder directly into her, pushing her away from the crying child with explosive, unrestrained force.
