Chapter 1 - The Precipice of Violence

In a brightly lit, modern white kitchen, a young blonde woman in a green satin shirt stands behind a kitchen island, holding a heavy wooden candlestick high above her head as if to strike. In front of her, an elderly woman with white hair sits in a wheelchair, while a female nurse in dark blue scrubs stands protectively beside her. In the background doorway, a man in a white dress shirt enters, looking shocked. The camera is static at eye-level, capturing a medium-wide shot of the tense confrontation.

The air inside the sprawling, glass-walled estate on Montgomery Hill felt less like oxygen and more like a pressurized gas waiting for a single spark. Sunbeams streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows, washing the white quartz surfaces, brushed gold fixtures, and polished porcelain tiles in a warm, pristine glow. It was a room designed to project opulence, safety, and modern domestic perfection. Yet, standing in the center of that immaculate space, Chloe transformed the warm aesthetic into a stage for absolute terror.

Her ponytail swished violently as her muscles strained under the rich, emerald fabric of her green satin shirt. The shirt shimmered beneath the recessed ceiling lights, catching sharp reflections as she lifted her arms to their absolute limit. Clutched in her right hand was a massive, hand-carved mahogany candlestick—an antique heavy enough to crack bone, shatter a skull, and instantly end a fragile life.

Beneath the shadow of that raised timber sat Eleanor Sterling. At eighty-two years old, Eleanor was a ghost of her former self, her frail frame draped in a soft lavender cardigan, her white hair neatly pinned back, sitting helpless in a motorized leather wheelchair. Her thin hands trembled against the plastic armrests, her pale blue eyes wide with unadulterated fear. Beside her stood Sarah, a dedicated private nurse dressed in dark blue surgical scrubs. Sarah had thrown her body forward, placing her torso between the heavy piece of wood and the defenseless matriarch, her hands raised in a desperate, shield-like posture.

Chloe’s knuckles were bone-white against the dark wood of the candlestick. Her face was contorted into a mask of pure, unbridled malice, her chest rising and falling in rapid, shallow gasps. She was a fraction of a second away from bringing the heavy base down upon Eleanor's head.

"Put it down!"

The scream ripped through the kitchen like a mortar shell, shattering the fragile, terrifying stillness.

Arthur stood in the archway of the kitchen entrance, his leather messenger bag slung across his chest, his crisp white dress shirt unbuttoned at the collar. His face, usually defined by aristocratic composure, was pale, his eyes wide with horror as he absorbed the scene before him. He took three frantic, heavy steps into the room, his dress shoes clicking sharply against the tile, his trembling hand pointing directly at Chloe.
