Chapter 4 - The Impact of Reality

Arthur didn't give her time to craft another excuse. He didn't give her space to weave another web of manipulation.
He moved forward with terrifying speed, his heavy footsteps echoing like thunder against the marble flooring. Chloe’s artificial smile faltered, her eyes widening as she realized he was not stopping. She tried to pull the candlestick back toward her chest, but Arthur was already upon her.
He reached across the width of the quartz island, his hand shooting out like a vice. His fingers wrapped around the carved neck of the wooden candlestick, overlapping Chloe's hands, and with a single, furious wrench, he tore the heavy weapon entirely out of her grip.
BANG!

Arthur slammed the base of the mahogany candlestick down onto the white counter with horrific force. The impact produced a deafening, violent crash that sounded like a gunshot echoing through the pristine room. A tiny, microscopic chip of white quartz flew off the edge of the island, and the heavy vibration sent a nearby crystal vase rattling against the counter.
The sheer violence of the slam reaped an immediate reaction. Chloe recoiled instantly, taking a sharp, awkward step backward until her spine hit the lower kitchen cabinets. Her hands flew up to her face, her fingers slamming over her mouth to suppress a high-pitched scream of genuine terror. Her eyes, previously filled with arrogant manipulation, were now wide, glassy, and overflowing with sudden, overwhelming panic.
