Chapter 10 - Extinction

The heavy front door of the mansion burst open, followed by the heavy, rhythmic thud of tactical boots marching down the hardwood hallway.
Four uniformed police officers pushed into the modern white kitchen, their duty belts clanking, their hands resting cautiously near their holsters. The lead officer took in the scene in a fraction of a second—the crying woman on her knees, the heavy wooden candlestick resting beside the glass vial on the counter, the protective nurse standing by the wheelchair, and the grim-faced man holding the legal documents.
"Chloe Sterling?" the lead officer called out, stepping forward with a pair of steel handcuffs drawn from his belt.
Chloe didn't answer. She remained on the floor, her face buried in her hands, her shoulders shuddering as the metallic click-clack of the handcuffs echoed through the pristine space. The officers pulled her up by her arms, securing her wrists behind her back, her bright green satin shirt crumpling under their heavy grip.
As they led her away down the long corridor toward the waiting police cruisers, Chloe turned her head back one last time. Through her tear-blurred vision, she saw Arthur kneel beside Eleanor's wheelchair, gently taking his mother's frail, trembling hand in his own while Sarah placed a warm blanket over the old woman's shoulders.

The heavy front door slammed shut, cutting off the siren blare and plunging the house into a deep, peaceful quiet.
Inside the bright, modern white kitchen, the warm morning sun continued to pour through the high windows, illuminating the pristine counters, the quiet recovery of a family, and the final, absolute end of a lethal lie.
