Chapter 1 - The Sanctuary of Ashes

The grand lobby of the Sterling Estate felt less like a home and more like a cathedral dedicated to wealth and cold ambition. High above the mirror-polished marble floor, twin crystal chandeliers hung suspended from a gilded ceiling, casting warm, opulent light across the sprawling room. Every surface gleamed with meticulous care—the carved mahogany trim, the grand sweeping staircase draped in plush burgundy carpet, and the monumental marble fireplace over which hung a state-of-the-art wall-mounted television screen. Wealthy guests dressed in tailored tuxedos and shimmering evening gowns clustered in small, hushed circles near the stairs, their quiet laughter and clinking champagne glasses floating through the scented air like a practiced symphony.
Standing on the left side of the grand hall, near the foot of the stairs, was Maya. At nineteen years old, Maya wore the crisp blue-and-white cotton uniform of the Sterling household staff. Her dark hair was neatly pinned back, revealing a pale, delicate face that currently carried a look of profound distress. Maya had worked at the estate for less than three months, sending almost every dollar of her modest earnings back home to cover her younger brother's medical expenses. She had quickly learned that within the walls of High Ridge society, the staff were invisible ghost figures—meant to polish silver, pour wine, and disappear into the shadows the moment an argument arose.
Tonight was the annual Sterling Gala, an event celebrating the family's multi-million-dollar energy trust. Maya’s hands trembled slightly as she stood beside a small marble side table, her chest heaving with anxious breaths. She knew something was horribly wrong the moment the music stopped and the hushed whispers of the guests turned in her direction. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird as she looked down at the floor between her and her accuser.

Lying on the gleaming stone was a simple, worn brown leather handbag—Maya’s personal bag, which contained her identification, a few folded dollar bills, and her worn key ring.
Facing her, standing less than three feet away, was Victoria Sterling. Victoria was thirty-two, stunningly beautiful, and completely ruthless. Clad in an immaculate black one-shoulder dress that hugged her slender frame, her dark hair styled into sleek, retro waves that rested against her exposed collarbone, Victoria exuded an aura of total, unearned authority. For weeks, Victoria had been orchestrating a quiet campaign to purge the household of any staff members hired during the reign of the previous estate manager. To Victoria, Maya was not a person; she was merely a inconvenience to be discarded at the most opportune moment.
