Chapter 3 - The Triumph of the Snake

A sharp, audible intake of breath tore through the crowd as the diamond necklace caught the chandelier light, throwing dazzling prisms of blue and white fire across the polished marble floor.

Victoria looked down at the gleaming necklace, then back up at the weeping maid kneeling before her. A faint, triumphant smirk played on her crimson lips—a fleeting glimpse of dark satisfaction that vanished the moment she turned to address the shocked onlookers.

"There it is," Victoria proclaimed, her tone dripping with righteous indignation. "My grandmother's necklace, found inside her bag! I noticed it missing from my vanity less than ten minutes ago! She was planning to slip out through the service door before the toast!"

Maya shook her head in sheer, suffocating agony, her chest spasms breaking her breath into ragged, painful sobs. "No... no, please! I've never seen that necklace before! Someone put it in my bag! Please believe me!"

The wealthy guests murmured among themselves, exchanging cold, judgmental looks as they stared down at the helpless maid. To them, the evidence was absolute, undeniable, and clear: a poor girl tempted by unimaginable wealth, caught red-handed in the house of her benefactors.

Victoria stepped closer to Maya, leaning down slightly so her shadow completely covered the trembling girl. "You're finished, Maya," Victoria whispered, her voice dropping into a low, poisonous register that only the maid could hear. "By midnight, you'll be sitting in a county cell, and no one in this city will ever hire you again."

Maya buried her face in her hands, her shoulders shaking uncontrollably as the dark reality of her framing settled over her soul like a heavy iron vault. She had no money for lawyers, no powerful relatives to call, and no leverage against the formidable Sterling family name. She was completely, utterly ruined.
