Chapter 8 - The Parting of the Waters

The crowd of elite guests parted like a heavy curtain as the security guards led the frantic, protesting Victoria across the lobby toward the side exit. Her sleek black dress, her diamond earrings, and her immaculate hair now looked absurd, pathetic, and hollow against the backdrop of her public disgrace. Her shouts gradually faded down the long, vaulted corridor until the heavy mahogany doors closed with a solid, absolute thud.
The grand lobby was silent once more, save for the crackle of the wood fire beneath the television screen.
Julian extended a hand down toward Maya, helping the young maid rise gracefully to her feet. Though her cheek remained flushed and sore from the impact of the slap, Maya held her head up, her posture straightening as she wiped the final tears from her face. She looked around the room—at the senators, the socialites, and the executives who had so eagerly judged her minutes ago, but who now looked away in shame and embarrassment.
"You don't have to work another minute tonight, Maya," Julian said gently, taking the brown handbag from her hand and slinging it respectfully over his shoulder for her. "My private driver is waiting outside. He will take you home, and tomorrow morning, we will discuss your new position as the estate's primary administrator."
May you like
Maya looked at him, her dark eyes shining with a profound, quiet strength that had been forged in the fire of tonight's ordeal. "Thank you, Mr. Vance. But I'd like to get my things from the pantry first."
Julian smiled softly—a rare, genuine expression that acknowledged her dignity. "Of course."
