Chapter 1 - The Anatomy of a Scream

The sound of flesh striking flesh did not carry the clean, dry snap one might expect from a theatrical performance; it arrived as a dull, wet thud that vibrated directly through the polished oak floorboards of the living room.
Leo was seven years old, a frail creature composed mostly of sharp collarbones and large, terrified hazel eyes. He stood backed tightly against the off-white plaster wall of the residence, his small spine pressed so flat against the latex paint that he could feel the coldness of the drywall seeping through his thin, royal-blue short-sleeved t-shirt. His left cheek was no longer skin-toned; it had blossomed into a violent, angry constellation of scarlet and deep purple, a raised contusion that throbbed in precise synchronization with his galloping pulse.
He had his eyes squeezed shut so hard that pale, electric specks danced across his dark inner eyelids. His mouth was stretched into a wide, ragged oval, emitting a continuous, high-pitched wail of pure agony—a sound that shredded his vocal cords and filled the sunlit room with the raw, metallic scent of desperation. Tears cut clean, glistening tracks through the dust on his skin, pooling at the jawline before dripping onto his collar.
"Shut up! Shut your useless mouth!"
The woman standing over him was Evelyn. At thirty-one, her appearance usually projected the icy, curated perfection of a suburban real estate broker. Her chestnut hair was sculpted into soft, cascading waves, and her beige silk blouse was tucked seamlessly into high-waisted black trousers. But her face was currently distorted into a mask of cruel, predatory malice. Her chest heaved beneath the fine silk, her nostrils flaring with every shallow breath.
In her right hand, folded double so the heavy brass buckle dangled like a pendulum of solid iron, was a thick, dark brown leather dress belt. The leather was supple from years of polish, but its edges were hard enough to split skin.
"Where is she, Leo?" Evelyn hissed, her voice dropping into a raspy, venomous whisper that cut straight through the boy's cries. She reached out with her left hand, her long, manicured nails digging into the soft flesh of Leo’s right upper arm, pinning him against the wall like a specimen on a board. "If you just tell me where your sister is, you won't get beaten anymore. It's that simple, you stupid little brat."
"Please..." Leo gasped, his throat raw, his hands clawing uselessly at the cold air in front of his chest. "Please... don't... please spare my sister! Don't hurt Lily! Please!"
"She's one year old! She doesn't even know her own name!" Evelyn snarled, her fingers tightening until Leo’s arm turned white under the pressure. She leaned in close, the sickeningly sweet scent of her expensive lavender perfume suffocating the child. "Where did you hide her? Did you put her in the attic? In the crawlspace? Tell me!"
Beneath the heavy oak coffee table in the center of the room, hidden behind the draping hem of a woven beige throw blanket, a tiny form trembled.
Lily, barely fourteen months old, was huddled on the cold hardwood, her chubby legs pulled up against her chest inside a pair of faded pink fleece pajamas pattern-printed with tiny white rabbits. Her golden ringlets were matted with sweat, and her wide blue eyes were fixed on her brother’s trembling legs. She had her small thumb jammed deep into her mouth, trying desperately to suppress her own soft, rhythmic whimpers, but every time the leather belt swished through the air, her tiny shoulders hitched in silent terror.
Evelyn caught the subtle rustle of the blanket fringe. Her eyes narrowed into slit-like embers of fury.

"You brought this on yourself!" Evelyn roared, stepping back and winding her right arm backward, pulling the doubled leather belt high above her shoulder. The brass buckle caught the bright, natural afternoon sunlight streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows, flashing like a blade before it descended.
Leo ducked his head, throwing his small hands over his ears, bracing his bruised body for the searing white pain he knew was coming.
