Chapter 8 - The Trigger Point

Evelyn’s face contorted into a violent mask of hatred.
"You arrogant, self-righteous bastard!" she screamed, dropping her civilized facade entirely.
She pulled the hammer of the revolver back with a sharp, mechanical CLICK.
The heavy iron hammer locked into place. The sound echoed through the high-ceilinged study like a gunshot in a cavern.
Daniel didn't flinch. He didn't blink. He raised the brass anchor paperweight slightly, his muscles tensing, preparing to throw it directly at her face the moment her finger began its final, two-millimeter contraction against the steel trigger.
A loud, sudden bang rattled the door frame.
"DAD!"
Leo’s scream shattered the standoff.
The boy had not stayed in his room. He stood at the end of the hallway, holding a heavy, iron fireplace poker in his small, bruised hands—a rusted rod almost as long as he was tall. His blue t-shirt was torn at the collar, his face was pale, but his hazel eyes were wide with a fierce, psychotic courage.
"LEO! GO BACK!" Daniel shouted, his voice finally breaking its calm barrier, exploding into a thunderous roar.
The distraction was total.
Evelyn’s head snapped toward the hallway, her eyes widening as she saw the small boy charging down the carpeted floor, trailing the heavy iron poker behind him like a lance.
In that millisecond of fractured attention, Daniel moved.
He didn't throw the paperweight. He stepped forward, his leather boot striking the hardwood floor with terrifying force, and slammed his left forearm directly across Evelyn’s throat, pinning her against the door frame.
CRACK.
The back of her head hit the white trim of the door casing. The revolver in her right hand discharged with a deafening roar.
BANG!
The bullet struck the ceiling plaster directly above Daniel’s head, raining a cloud of fine, white powder down over both of them like sudden snow. The muzzle flash illuminated the dark corridor in a blinding, violet instant.
Before Evelyn could re-index the gun, Daniel grabbed her right wrist with his free hand, twisting her arm violently outward and down.
CRACK-SNAP.

A sickening popping sound echoed from her wrist joint. Evelyn let out a high-pitched, curdling shriek of pure agony as her fingers lost all power. The Smith & Wesson .38 Special slipped from her useless hand, dropping onto the soft Persian rug.
Daniel didn't stop. He hooked his foot behind her ankle, sweeping her leg out from under her, and slammed her body face-down onto the floor with brutal, industrial force.
