Chapter 15 - The Golden Light

By 04:00 PM, the golden hour light returned to Willow Creek.

The sunlight streamed through the tall oak trees surrounding the local park, casting long, warm, amber beams across the green grass and the woodchip play area.

Leo was running down the grassy hill, his royal-blue sweater flapping in the cool autumn breeze, his laughter echoing across the open space as he chased a red rubber ball toward the playground.

Daniel walked slowly behind him, pushing Lily in a sturdy blue stroller.

The little girl was pointing excitedly at a family of ducks swimming along the edge of the pond, her tiny mouth making soft "quack-quack" noises as the stroller rolled over the smooth asphalt path.

Daniel stopped the stroller near a wooden bench overlooking the water. He sat down, wrapping his wool coat tightly around his chest, watching his son run up the steps of the giant red slide.

Leo reached the top of the platform. He paused, turning around to look down at his father.

He raised his hand, waving wildly, his face illuminated by the brilliant, golden hour sunlight—a face free of bruises, free of tears, free of shadows.

Daniel raised his hand in return, a soft, genuine smile breaking across his features for the first time in three years.

He looked up at the sky, where thin white clouds were drifting peacefully across a pale blue canvas, illuminated by the dying sun.

The belt was gone. The lies were broken. The dark house on Willow Creek was once again a home.

As Leo came flying down the red slide, screaming with pure, unadulterated joy, Daniel reached into his coat pocket, his fingers brushing against the small, worn leather journal resting securely against his chest.

The symphony had ended. The silence that remained was not empty—it was full of light, full of life, and entirely theirs.
