Chapter 12 - The Ledger of the Dead

At 08:30 PM, the last of the police vehicles cleared the driveway of the house on Willow Creek Road.
The storm had finally passed, leaving the night sky clear, dark, and filled with millions of sharp, icy stars. The cold autumn air smelled of wet earth, pine needles, and crushed leaves.
Inside the house, the silence was no longer heavy or terrifying. It was the quiet of a fortress after a siege—weary, scarred, but standing.
Daniel had put both children to bed in the master bedroom, placing Lily in a portable travel crib beside his own king-sized bed, and tucking Leo under the heavy feather duvet beside him. The boy had fallen asleep almost instantly, his small hand still clutching the hem of Daniel’s slate-blue shirt even in his sleep.
Daniel sat on the edge of the mattress in the dim light of a single bedside lamp.
In his right hand, he held a small, worn leather-bound journal—Sarah’s journal, which had been recovered from the safe after Evelyn had been removed.
He opened the yellowed pages, his dark eyes scanning the neat, flowing handwriting of his late wife.

If anything ever happens to me, Daniel, do not look for revenge. Look at the children. Look at Leo’s eyes when he laughs. Look at Lily’s smile. They are the only part of me that remains in this world. Keep them safe. That is your only duty.
Daniel closed the journal softly.
A single tear cut a clean, hot path through the dust on his cheek, dropping onto the dark leather cover.
He looked over at his son, whose breathing was now deep, slow, and rhythmic. The red mark on Leo’s cheek looked less angry in the soft yellow lamplight, turning from a symbol of violence into a badge of survival.

Daniel reached down, gently untying Leo’s fingers from his shirt hem, smoothing the feather duvet over the boy's small shoulders.
"I kept them safe, Sarah," Daniel whispered into the quiet room. "I kept them safe."
