Chapter 2 - The Interrupted Arc

The blow never landed.
The air in the living room seemed to freeze mid-breath. The violent swish of the leather strap was cut short, replaced by a sudden, sickening sound of leather strain and a soft, wet gasp of surprise.
Evelyn’s arm remained suspended in the air, locked at the apex of its violent arc. Her shoulder joint twitched, her muscles straining against an invisible, immovable force that had anchored her wrist in mid-air.
Slowly, her head snapped around, her perfectly manicured face twisting from psychotic rage into sudden, disoriented confusion.
A hand had clamped onto her right wrist. It was a large, broad hand with square-cut fingernails, calloused palms, and a heavy platinum wedding band that bit slightly into her skin under the pressure of its grip. The veins on the back of the hand stood out like thick cords beneath tan skin.
Standing directly behind her, towering over her beige silk shoulders, was a man.
He was thirty-four years old, broad-chested, wearing a dark olive-green utility jacket over a slate-blue button-down shirt. His dark hair was slightly wind-muffled, and his jawline was covered in a two-day stubble. But it was his eyes that turned the warm, sun-drenched room into a meat locker—they were a flat, stormy gray, entirely devoid of warmth, fixed on Evelyn’s face with a lethal, unblinking intensity.
His name was Daniel.
For three agonizing seconds, no one spoke. The only sound in the house was the faint ticking of the grandfather clock in the foyer and the irregular, hitching gasps of the bruised boy pressed against the plaster wall.
Daniel’s fingers tightened around Evelyn’s wrist, squeezing just enough to force the blood out of her knuckles. Her fingers involuntarily loosened, and the heavy leather belt slipped from her grasp, falling onto the rug with a dull, harmless thud.
"Go ahead," Daniel said. His voice was not a shout; it was a low, resonant baritone, quiet, steady, and utterly terrifying in its absolute lack of inflection. "Try it again."
Evelyn’s breath hitched in her throat. The color drained from her cheeks in a rapid, terrifying wave, leaving her foundation looking like chalk paste against her skin. Her lower lip trembled, her composure shattering into a thousand jagged pieces.
"Daniel..." she whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the air conditioning. "You... you weren't supposed to be home until tomorrow..."
Leo slowly peeled his hands away from his face. Through his tear-blurred vision, he looked up at the tall man standing over his stepmother. His swollen, red-marked left cheek throbbed, but a strange, disbelieving gasp escaped his lips.

From beneath the dark shade of the wooden coffee table, the blanket fringe moved again. A tiny pink-clad knee emerged onto the polished floor, followed by a pale, tear-stained face crowned with golden curls.
"Da-da?" Lily whimpered, her tiny voice breaking the heavy silence as she crawled out toward the green jacket.
