Chapter 14 - The Convergence of Evidence

Evelyn’s fingers tightened weakly around Clara’s hand. "They... they said you were dead," Evelyn rasped, her lungs struggling against the heavy sedatives flowing through her system. "They told me... you died in the crash..."
"They lied to both of us," Clara said, her voice turning to iron as she looked up at the IV bag hanging above the bed. She reached up and turned the plastic flow valve shut, stopping the drip of the clear, sedative-laced liquid entering her sister's vein. "It's over now. They are never going to hurt you again."
Clara stood up. She walked over to the tall metal shelving units lining the back wall. She pulled down three heavy leather-bound logbooks containing hand-written medical entries signed by Dr. Marcus Vance and Eleanor. She grabbed a box of labeled blood vials and diagnostic drives sitting on the counter.
This was not just a crime scene; it was an industrial vault of human exploitation. Every entry, every vial, every line of data was an unassailable nail in the coffin of Julian’s family.
Clara gathered the logbooks under her arm, secured the drives in her pocket next to the MicroSD card, and looked back at Evelyn.
"Can you walk?" Clara asked softly.
Evelyn shook her head weakly. "No... my legs..."
"It doesn't matter," Clara said. She reached down, wrapped her arms around her twin sister’s thin, frail frame, and lifted her off the steel table. Evelyn felt weightless, like a bundle of dry twigs.

Clara carried her sister out of the concrete room, down the sterile corridor, and began the slow, agonizing climb up the concrete stairs toward the light above.
As she reached the top of the stairs, stepping back into the blinding brightness of the sunlit hallway, she heard the front door of the house slam open with violent force.
