Chapter 8 - The Digital Crypt

With trembling fingers, Julian opened the lid of the sleek laptop. The screen illuminated, casting a cold, blue glow across his pale face. He reached into his pocket, pulled out an external card reader, and plugged it into the USB-C port on the side of the machine.
His eyes flicked up to Clara, searching her face for any trace of the soft, compliant woman he had been married to for six years. He found nothing. Her eyes were dark, flinty, and completely hollowed out of affection.
Julian picked up the MicroSD card from the counter and inserted it into the reader. The laptop’s operating system let out a soft chime as the external drive mounted onto the desktop. A single folder appeared on the screen, labeled simply with an eight-digit date code from three months prior: 05-14-2026.
"Double-click it," Clara said, leaning over the island, her hands gripping the edge of the quartz so tightly her knuckles turned white.
Julian’s hand hovered over the trackpad. Beside him, Eleanor let out a sharp, audible breath. "Julian, don't," his mother whispered from the doorway. "You don't have to submit to this execution."
"Shut up, Eleanor!" Clara barked without taking her eyes off the screen. "Click it, Julian, or I take the card and walk out that door right now."
Julian’s finger pressed down on the trackpad. The folder expanded, revealing a single video file encoded in standard surveillance format. The file name read: BASEMENT_NORTH_04.MP4.

Clara’s heart dropped into her stomach. Basement North. Their house didn't have a northern basement wing accessible to the family—or so she had been told when they bought the property. The house had been custom-built by Julian's family estate years before they met. She had always assumed the locked steel door beneath the main staircase led to a utility cellar housing the HVAC units and main water valves.
Julian pressed play.
