Chapter 9 - The Chamber Beneath

The video window expanded to full screen. The timestamp in the top right corner read MAY 14, 2026 - 03:14:22 AM.
The room displayed on the screen was not a utility cellar. It was a windowless, soundproofed room constructed of raw poured concrete. The only furniture in the room was a heavy steel examination table, a medical monitoring rig, and a tall metal shelving unit stacked with plastic storage bins labeled with alphanumeric codes.
The lighting in the room was harsh, clinical, coming from fluorescent tubes mounted to the ceiling.
In the center of the frame stood two people. One was Eleanor, wearing a dark green surgical smock over her clothes. The other was a man whose back was turned to the camera, wearing a white lab coat.
On the steel examination table lay a woman.
Clara gasped, her hand flying to her mouth to choke back a scream. The woman on the table was pale, emaciated, her dark hair matted against her skull. Electrodes were attached to her temples, wired into a portable diagnostic monitor that pulsed with weak, green digital lines.
"My God..." Clara breathed, her eyes wide with horrified fascination. "Who is that? Julian, who is that?"
Julian turned his head away from the screen, covering his eyes with his palm. He couldn't look.
The video played on. The man in the white lab coat turned around toward the camera to reach for a tray of instruments. The light hit his face clearly.

It was Dr. Marcus Vance—Julian’s uncle, a renowned neurosurgeon who had allegedly retired to Europe three years ago after a scandal involving unauthorized clinical trials.
On the screen, Eleanor bent over the unconscious woman on the table, adjusting the flow rate of an IV bag hanging from a metal pole. She spoke to Dr. Vance, her lips moving on the silent video feed. She wasn't treating a patient; she was administering a controlled, pharmacological coma.
