Chapter 7 - The Sanctum of Glass

The interior of the house was blindingly bright. The minimalist design—polished concrete floors, floor-to-ceiling glass walls, and stark white furniture—acted as an amplifier for the blinding sun outside. In the past, Clara had loved this open layout; it felt clean, modern, and free of secrets. Now, as she walked into the kitchen carrying Lily, the glass walls felt like a fishbowl, a transparent cage where horrors were committed in plain sight under the guise of architectural sophistication.

Clara set Lily down on the plush leather sofa in the living room, pulling a soft wool throw blanket over her shoulders.

"Stay here, sweetie. Don't move," Clara said softly, kissing her daughter's forehead. Lily nodded silently, pulling the blanket up to her chin, her eyes tracking her mother's every move with hyper-vigilant terror.

Clara walked back into the open kitchen. Julian was standing by the central quartz island, his hands resting flat against the white stone surface, his head bowed. Eleanor stood near the doorway leading to the garage, her arms crossed tightly, her face a pale mask of bitter fury.

On the center of the kitchen island lay Julian’s smartphone and a sleek, aluminum laptop—the primary workstation he used when reviewing home security feeds and managing his corporate assets.

Clara walked over to the island. She didn't hesitate. She reached into her pocket, pulled out the MicroSD card, and dropped it onto the white quartz surface. The tiny black plastic square sat between them, a dark, radioactive point of reality in the pristine white room.

"Open it, Julian," Clara said, her voice dropping into a low, terrifying command.

Julian didn't move. "Clara, please. Just listen to me for one minute. Let me explain before you look at anything."

"Open the laptop, Julian," she repeated, her voice rising slightly, every syllable laced with steel. "Insert the card. Now."
