Chapter 6 - The Unlocking

Julian returned to the deck, his footsteps heavy and dragging. In his right hand, he held a small, brass Yale key attached to a simple wire ring. He approached his wife and daughter slowly, avoiding their eyes, looking down at the cedar planks as if he were walking toward an executioner's block.
He dropped to one knee beside Lily. As he reached out to insert the key into the heavy iron padlock, his hands were trembling so violently that the metal tip clinked uselessly against the keyhole three times before finding its mark.
"Let me do it," Clara growled, snatching the brass key out of his fingers.
She shoved him back with her forearm. Clara inserted the key, turned it to the right, and felt the heavy internal tumbler snap open with a dull, metallic thunk. She unhooked the shackle and unwound the heavy iron links from around Lily's waist. The moment the iron fell away, dropping onto the deck planks with a loud, hollow clatter, Lily let out a long, shuddering sigh of relief and buried her face into Clara’s shoulder.
Clara scooped her daughter up into her arms, standing up in a single, fluid motion. The physical weight of the five-year-old was nothing compared to the crushing weight of the revelation settling over her chest. She looked down at Julian, who remained on one knee on the deck, looking up at her like a defeated servant.
"Where is your phone?" Clara asked him.
"Inside," Julian muttered, his voice barely audible. "On the kitchen island."
"Get up," Clara ordered. "We are going inside. All of us."
Eleanor took a step back, her eyes darting toward the side gate that led out to the driveway. "I have no intention of participating in this hysteria, Clara. I am leaving."
May you like
Clara didn't even turn her head. "If you take one step off this property, Eleanor, I will call the police and report a child abduction and torture in progress. Look up at that camera. I have your face, I have your slap, and I have the chain. Try me."
Eleanor froze, her hand hovering over her chest, her dark burgundy shirt rising and falling with her frantic breathing. She was trapped, held hostage by the very surveillance grid she had insisted on installing to protect the family's privacy.
