Chapter 12 - The Sanctuary of Iron

The subway car hurtled through the dark, its metal frame rattling against the iron ribs of the tunnel.
Julian slid down the graffiti-covered wall of the subway car, sitting flat on the dirty floor. He pulled Lily close into his lap, wrapping his arms around her and the pink blanket, trying to shield them from the cold air rushing through the car's vents.
The baby, Maya, let out a soft cry. Lily immediately reached down with her small thumb, gently stroking the infant’s wet cheek.
"She's hungry," Lily whispered, her dark eyes looking up at Julian with profound, weary intelligence. "Mommy used to feed her the warm milk from the blue bottle before the dark man took the keys."
Julian felt a sharp, unbearable constriction in his throat. He reached out with a shaking hand and touched Lily’s wet hair, smoothing the tangled dark locks away from her forehead.
"Where was the room, Lily?" Julian asked softly, his voice trembling. "The room with the iron door?"
"Under the big red house," Lily whispered, her small head resting against his chest. "Where the white fence is. Near the big lake with the boats."
Julian’s breath caught in his lungs.
The Vance Estate at Lake Geneva.
It wasn't a corporate facility. It wasn't a secret medical facility built in some industrial park. Clara had been hidden in the storm shelter beneath Arthur Vance’s private summer estate—the very place where Julian and Evelyn had spent their weekends, having champagne brunches on the lawn while Clara was locked thirty feet beneath their feet.
The sheer, monstrous horror of it made Julian’s stomach turn.
He reached into his back trouser pocket. Miraculously, his leather wallet was still there, soaked but intact. Inside was his personal cell phone—a heavy, encrypted device he used for private hedge fund trades.
He pulled it out. The screen flickered to life, showing three missed calls from Senator Vance’s chief of staff and a text message from an unknown number:
RETURN THE ASSETS OR WE TERMINATE THE MOTHER.

Julian’s thumb hovered over the screen. His storm-grey eyes hardened into ice.
He didn't reply to the text. Instead, he dialed a three-digit extension he hadn't used in six years—a direct line to the Special Investigations Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Washington D.C.
