Chapter 15 - The Veil Restored

The trial of Senator Arthur Vance, Evelyn Vance, and Dr. Marcus Sterling was the largest political scandal in state history.
The secondary ledgers provided by Julian exposed a network of illegal medical trials, dark money PACs, and institutional corruption that reached the highest levels of government. Senator Vance was sentenced to forty years in a federal maximum-security facility. Marcus Sterling lost his medical license and was remanded to high-security custody.
Evelyn Vance, stripped of her wealth, her social standing, and her freedom, stood before the judge in a plain orange jumpsuit—the white satin gown replaced forever by federal denim. As she was led away in handcuffs, she turned her head to look at the back of the courtroom.
Sitting in the third row was Julian.
He wore a simple charcoal suit, his storm-grey eyes calm, clear, and unyielding. Beside him sat Clara, her skin healthy again, her green eyes bright with life, holding small baby Maya in her lap. And sitting between them was Lily, wearing a clean, beautiful yellow sundress, holding Julian’s hand tightly in her small fist.
Evelyn’s lips twitched into a bitter, furious scowl, but Julian didn't look away. He didn't blink. He watched her until the iron doors of the holding cell slammed shut behind her, cutting off her light forever.
Six months later.
The sun was setting over the quiet, blue waters of Lake Michigan. The warm summer breeze rustled through the green leaves of the oak trees surrounding a small, wooden cottage sitting on the bluff.
On the front porch, Julian sat on a wooden bench, watching Lily chase fireflies across the lawn. The little girl’s laughter bubbled up into the evening air, sweet, wild, and completely free of terror.
Inside the kitchen, through the open screen door, Clara was singing softly as she prepared dinner, the warm glow of the yellow lamp illuminating her smiling face as she rocked baby Maya in her crib.

Julian picked up his coffee cup, taking a slow sip, feeling the cool evening air against his face.
The veil of white satin, lies, and terror had finally been lifted. And for the first time in his life, Julian Sterling was home.
