Chapter 5 - Shadows Beneath the Altar

Evelyn’s face did not pale; it hardened like wet concrete setting in cold air. She slowly let her hands drop to her sides, the heavy satin of her dress rustling softly against the marble floor.
"You are insane, Julian," she said, her voice terrifyingly calm now, devoid of the previous screaming rage. "You've been overworked. The merger... the stress of the wedding. You're having a psychotic break."
She turned her head slightly, looking past Julian toward her father, Senator Vance, who was standing at the edge of the aisle with his hands thrust deep into his trouser pockets. A silent, unspoken signal passed between father and daughter—a microscopic nod of the head that set a pre-arranged machine into motion.
From the side doors near the pipe organ, four more men in dark charcoal suits entered the sanctuary. Unlike the cathedral security guard, these men did not carry ear-pieces or polite badges. They walked with the heavy, low-centered balance of trained tactical operators, their right hands resting inside the left breasts of their jackets.
The guests in the pews began to sense the shift in atmosphere. The whispers dried up, replaced by a tense, heavy dread. People began to slide back into their seats, eyes wide with fear.
Julian saw the men instantly. His hand dropped to Lily’s shoulder, pulling the trembling seven-year-old behind his legs.
"Evelyn," Julian said, his voice dropping into a low, lethal register. "Where is Clara?"
"There is no Clara, Julian," Evelyn said, stepping closer to him, her voice a soothing, terrifying purr that barely carried past the front row. "Clara is dust. She has been dust for four years. What you see before you is a sick, cruel stunt designed to ruin our family name on the eve of father's campaign announcement."
She reached out her gloved hand, her fingers gently touching his cheek. Her touch was ice-cold.
"Come back to the altar, my love," Evelyn whispered, her eyes locking onto his with an intensity that bordered on hypnosis. "Let the archbishop finish the ceremony. Father’s men will take care of these unfortunate children. They will be put in a proper facility. A clean facility. Away from the public eye."
Lily let out a terrified shriek from behind Julian’s leg, her small hands clutching his trousers. "No! Don't let them take us back to the iron door! The man with the needle is there!"
Julian looked at Evelyn’s hand on his cheek. He looked at the wedding ring resting on her finger—a five-carat flawless diamond he had bought three weeks ago.

Then he reached up, grabbed her wrist, and pulled her hand off his face with cold, brutal force.
"If anyone touches these children," Julian said, his storm-grey eyes flashing with a violent, dangerous light, "I will burn the Vance family name to the ground."
