Chapter 14 - The Return to the Altar

Two hours later, the rain had eased into a heavy, freezing fog that hung over the grounds of the Vance Estate at Lake Geneva.

The grand stone mansion sat on a high bluff overlooking the black, still waters of the lake. Usually guarded by discrete private security, the driveway was now choked with twenty black federal vehicles, their red and blue strobe lights painting the wet pine trees in flashing colors.

Fully armed FBI tactical operators in heavy body armor were sweeping the grounds, their boots crunching on the wet gravel.

Julian stood beside a federal command van near the front gates, wrapped in a dark blue police jacket provided by Special Agent Miller. Beside him, tucked safely inside the warm interior of an ambulance, Lily and baby Maya were being examined by gentle federal paramedics, drinking hot chocolate from paper cups.

The heavy wooden doors of the mansion’s side basement entrance swung open with a violent BANG.

Four tactical operators stepped out into the fog, carrying a stretcher between them.

Julian’s heart stopped. He vaulted over the low stone wall, sprinting across the lawn, ignoring Miller’s shout to stay back.

"Clara!" Julian screamed.

The operators set the stretcher down on the wet grass near the ambulance.

Lying on the canvas was a woman. Her blonde hair—the exact shade of Lily’s—was long, matted, and streaked with grey. Her skin was translucent, pale as wax, and her hands were thin, bony, marked with old IV scars.

She slowly opened her eyes. They were deep, brilliant green—the eyes Julian had dreamed about every night for four long, agonizing years.

She looked up at the sky, feeling the cold fog on her face. Then her gaze drifted sideways, finding Julian’s rain-soaked face.

Her dry, cracked lips moved.

"Julian?" she whispered, her voice barely a breath. "You... you came for us?"

Julian fell to his knees in the wet mud beside the stretcher, taking her cold, bony hand in both of his, pressing his forehead against her knuckles as hot tears finally broke from his eyes.

"I'm here, Clara," Julian sobbed, his chest heaving. "I'm here. You're safe now. The girls are safe."

From the back of the ambulance, Lily scrambled out, dropping her cup, sprinting across the grass, her small bare feet sinking into the mud as she threw herself over her mother's chest.

"Mommy!" Lily cried, burying her face into Clara’s neck. "Daddy found us! I brought the baby!"

Clara reached up with weak, trembling arms, wrapping them around her daughter, holding her close as the storm finally broke above them.
