THE VEIL OF ILLUSION / Chapter 4 / 15

Chapter 4 - The Ghost of Oakridge

The little girl, Lily, shrank back slightly as Evelyn’s shadow fell over her, but she held her ground. She looked down at the infant in her arms, then back at Julian’s tortured, pale face.

"Mommy isn't dead," Lily said softly, her small voice trembling with absolute, unshakeable certainty. "She was in the room with the iron door. But two days ago, the water stopped working, and the dark man didn't bring the bread. She told me to take Maya and run out through the small window near the trees."

Julian let out a ragged, gasping sound—a terrible groan of realization that seemed to rip through his lungs. He reached out and gently pulled the corner of the threadbare pink blanket away from the baby's face.

Beneath the cloth lay a tiny, newborn infant, no more than two weeks old. Its skin was pale, its tiny tufts of fine hair light blonde, and around its wrist was a thin, pink plastic hospital band.

Julian bent closer, his eyes scanning the faded black ink printed on the plastic band.

PATIENT ID: 884-CLARA VANCE. LOCATION: SUB-LEVEL 3.

The air in the cathedral seemed to drop ten degrees in a single second.

Senator Vance stepped forward, his heavy leather shoes clacking against the marble. "Julian! Get up off the floor! This is an outrageous setup by my political opponents! Security, I ordered you to clear this aisle!"

The two black-suited security guards stepped forward again, reaching out their thick hands to grab Lily’s small arms.

"Don't you touch her!" Julian screamed.

He sprang to his feet with terrifying speed, shoving the first guard backward with such force that the heavy man lost his balance and crashed into the third row of pews, sending wooden chairs rattling against the floor. Julian stepped in front of Lily and the baby, shielding them with his broad, tuxedo-clad frame.

"Julian! Have you lost your mind?!" Evelyn screamed, her voice reaching a crescendo of pure hysteria. She lunged forward, grabbing his silk lapel, her diamond nails digging through the fabric into his chest. "You are marrying ME today! This is OUR day! You are throwing away your future, your firm, your life, for a delusion!"

Julian looked down at Evelyn’s face. For the first time in five years, he looked at her not with admiration or deference, but with a terrifying, cold clarity. He saw the sharp, unyielding lines of her jaw, the dead, calculating look in her eyes, and the desperate, manic edge to her anger.

"It wasn't a car crash, was it, Evelyn?" Julian whispered.

Evelyn stopped pulling his lapel. Her hands went still.

"What did you say?" she murmured, her voice flat, emotionless.

"Four years ago," Julian said, his voice rising so that every guest in the silent cathedral could hear every syllable. "You told me Clara ran her car off the cliff on Route 9. You showed me the police report. You gave me her ashes in a bronze urn."

He took a step toward her, forcing her to step backward down the altar stairs.

"So why does this baby have Clara’s medical band on her wrist, dated fourteen days ago?"
