Chapter 1 - The Strike in the Foyer

A wide shot of a grand, luxurious foyer with a high ceiling, a large crystal chandelier, and massive dark wooden double doors in the background. A young woman with long brown hair, wearing a black leather dress with gold shoulder pads and thigh-high black boots, stands in the center holding a small crying boy in a beige coat. She holds a black whip raised in her hand. The floor is polished white marble with black geometric borders. The lighting is dramatic and cool-toned, casting soft shadows.
The echo of a child’s sob reverberated off the cold Italian marble walls, but it found no mercy in Victoria Vance’s eyes.
She stood in the center of the grand entrance hall of the Sterling Estate, her silhouette razor-sharp against the harsh, cool-toned glow of the massive crystal chandelier above. Victoria wore a custom-tailored black leather dress, structured with heavy gold shoulder pads that caught the icy overhead light, paired with tight, thigh-high black leather boots. Her long, dark brown hair fell over her shoulders like braided silk, framing a face carved from bitter, unyielding arrogance.
In her right hand, she gripped a black leather riding crop—a heavy, coiled whip with a weighted handle. Her knuckles burned white against the leather grip.
"Be quiet!" Victoria hissed, her voice cutting through the stillness like a serrated blade. "Look at me when I speak to you, Leo!"
Before her stood four-year-old Leo, shrinking back into the suffocating fabric of his oversized beige trench coat. Tears tracked continuously through the dust on his tiny cheeks, his bottom lip trembling uncontrollably as his small hands clutched the lapels of his coat. He was terrified. Not merely of the heavy leather whip in her hand, but of the woman herself—the woman who had entered his life six months ago like an invasive shadow, slowly displacing every piece of warmth the boy had ever known.
Victoria stepped closer, the sharp click of her stiletto boots sounding like gunshots against the polished black-and-white geometric marble floor. She raised her hand high into the air. The leather whip curled back, poised to strike the terrified child across his shoulders.
"Stop, please!" a voice shrieked.
From the service archway, Martha, the estate’s head housekeeper, threw herself forward with frantic, reckless speed. Dressed in her traditional maroon uniform, white apron, and starched white cap, the middle-aged woman did not hesitate. She lunged between Victoria’s descending arm and the small boy, wrapping her arms around Leo to shield him with her own body.
CRACK!
The leather lash whistled through the icy air and struck Martha across her upper back. The fabric of her maroon uniform tore slightly under the violent impact. Martha let out a sharp, breathless gasp of agony, her body sagging under the force of the strike, but her arms remained locked tightly around the child.
Victoria did not flinch. Her face twisted into a snarl of pure disgust as she pulled the whip back, readying a second blow. "Get out of my way, you pathetic old servant! You don't tell me what to do in my own house!"
"You will not touch him!" Martha choked out, her face pale with pain, tears of anger welling in her tired eyes as she held Leo close against her chest. "He is just a child! He didn't break that vase on purpose!"
"He is a bastard parasite, just like his mother was!" Victoria yelled, her arm rising higher into the air, the gold shoulder pads gleaming under the chandelier. "And I am going to teach him respect before I throw both of you out onto the street!"

With a vicious, sharp flick of her wrist, Victoria brought the whip whipping downward once more. Martha closed her eyes, tensing her shoulders to receive the blow, while Leo buried his face deep into the housekeeper's apron, crying hysterically.
The leather cut through the air, inches from Martha's neck—
