Chapter 9 - The Cleansed House

By afternoon, the fog had burned away, revealing a brilliant, pale blue autumn sky that flooded the grand foyer with warm, golden sunlight.

The heavy mahogany double doors stood open, allowing the fresh, cool breeze to sweep away the stale remnants of the previous night's tension.

In the center of the foyer, where the cold marble had once held the shadow of a raised whip, four-year-old Leo sat on a soft, hand-woven rug. He was wearing a simple yellow sweater and blue jeans, happily driving a small wooden toy train along a circular track he had built across the black-and-white geometric patterns of the floor.

His laughter, soft, light, and musical, filled the vast space, bouncing off the high ceilings like a song of restoration.

Martha walked through the service archway, carrying a tray with two fresh cups of tea and a plate of warm cinnamon biscuits. Her gait was light, the pain in her back forgotten under the profound sense of peace that had returned to the estate.

"Master Leo," Martha called out gently, setting the tray down on a side table near the grand staircase. "Time for your afternoon snack."

Leo looked up, his bright brown eyes shining with joy. "Can Daddy have a biscuit too?"

"Daddy can have whatever he likes," a voice answered from the stairs.

Julian walked down the broad mahogany staircase, dressed casually in a grey wool sweater and dark trousers. His eyes were no longer cold or distant; the steel grey had softened into a warm, clear light as he looked at his son.

He walked over to the rug, dropping to his knees beside Leo and picking up one of the wooden train cars.

"Did you finish building the track, buddy?" Julian asked, setting the train on the wooden rails.

"Yes!" Leo chimed, clapping his small hands together happily. "It goes all the way around, and it doesn't break!"

Julian pulled the small boy into his lap, wrapping his arms around him and burying his face in the child's soft hair. He held him close, feeling the steady, warm beat of Leo's heart against his own chest.

"No," Julian whispered softly, kissing the top of the boy's head. "It's never going to break again."
