Chapter 5 - The Calculated Trap

The revelation hung in the quiet hallway like a cloud of poison gas.
Julian felt a cold, sharp knot tighten in the pit of his stomach. "She broke it on purpose?"
"Yes, sir," Martha whispered, tears springing to her eyes once more. "She did it to provoke a reaction. She wanted an excuse to punish Master Leo, to break his spirit so he would become fearful and obedient before the wedding. She has been doing smaller things for weeks, sir... hiding his toys, whispering cruel things to him when you were at the office..."
Julian’s jaw clenched so hard his teeth clicked. The rage that had filled him in the foyer returned, but now it was cold, deliberate, and deeply analytical.
Victoria Vance was not merely a woman with an explosive temper; she was a master of psychological manipulation. She was the eldest daughter of Vance Bio-Tech’s founder—a family notorious in high society for their ruthless, calculated acquisition of wealth and power.
She hadn't just wanted Julian; she had wanted the Sterling inheritance, the vast network of shipping lines, real estate, and corporate dominance that belonged solely to Julian and his bloodline.
And Leo was the only obstacle in her way.
"Why didn't you tell me this earlier, Martha?" Julian asked, his voice low and tight.
"I tried, sir," Martha confessed sadly. "But Miss Victoria intercepted my messages. She threatened to have my son—who works at your company's logistics hub—fired and blacklisted from the industry if I ever spoke a word against her to you. I was terrified..."
"I understand," Julian said gently, placing a hand on the old woman's shoulder. "You protected my son tonight at the cost of your own safety. I will never forget that, Martha. Your son’s job is secure. I will personally move him to the executive board's private detail tomorrow."
Martha breathed a long sigh of relief, bowing her head. "Thank you, Mr. Julian. Thank you."
"Go get some rest," Julian instructed softly. "I have calls to make."
As Martha walked down the corridor toward her quarters, Julian turned and walked into his private study at the end of the west wing. He pulled out his phone, his screen illuminating his harsh, unreadable features in the dark room.
He dialed a private, unlisted number.
The call connected on the third ring. "Sterling," a raspy, mature voice answered from the receiver. "It's midnight. This better be urgent."
"It is, Marcus," Julian said, his voice cold as ice. "Execute the short-sell order on Vance Bio-Tech stock at market open tomorrow. And call our legal team. I want every asset tie between Sterling Enterprises and the Vance family severed by noon."

A short pause followed on the other end of the line. "Did she step over the line?"
"She laid a hand on my son," Julian replied quietly. "I am going to burn her empire to the ground."
