Chapter 6 - The Echo in the Leather

By dawn, the rain had stopped, leaving behind a thick, low-hanging fog that blanketed the vast grounds of the Sterling Estate.
Julian stood in his study, staring out through the tall glass windows at the misty gardens below. He held a glass of dark amber whiskey in his right hand, though he hadn't taken a single sip. His navy blue suit had been replaced by a simple black turtleneck sweater and black trousers. He hadn't slept a single minute.
On his desk lay a sleek black leather binder containing the confidential investigation report his private security firm had compiled overnight.
The findings were horrifying.
Victoria Vance had not entered his life by chance. Her father's firm, Vance Bio-Tech, was sitting on the edge of catastrophic bankruptcy following a failed pharmaceutical trial overseas. The engagement between Victoria and Julian was meant to be the financial bridge that saved her family from complete ruin.
But the report detailed something far more sinister than corporate greed.
Three months ago, Victoria had made several private inquiries with an unaccredited medical clinic in Switzerland, researching the legal parameters of declaring a young child mentally unfit or developmentally incapacitated. Her plan had been clear: once they were married, she intended to have Leo declared incompetent, removing him from his father's will and placing his inheritance under her direct guardianship.
Julian closed the binder with a heavy, muffled thud.
The leather whip she had raised in the foyer was not an isolated outburst of frustration. It was the first step in a calculated campaign of psychological breaking.
A discreet chime sounded from his desk terminal. Julian pressed a button, activating the intercom.
"Sir," his security chief’s voice echoed into the room. "Victoria Vance’s legal counsel is at the main gate. They are demanding entry, claiming they have a court-ordered injunction to retrieve personal property from the estate."
Julian smiled—a short, dark smile that contained no humor whatsoever.
"Let them in," Julian commanded calmly. "And call the local precinct. Tell Detective Vance that I have evidence of an attempted assault and extortion ready for him."

Julian walked out of his study, pulling a small silver flash drive from his pocket. On it was the complete high-definition security footage from the foyer—capturing Victoria lifting the whip, striking Martha, and threatening the child, recorded by the hidden cameras integrated into the chandelier's base.
She had thought the foyer was her stage to exert control. She had no idea it was a trap that had caught her on camera from three separate angles.
