Chapter 2 - The Testimony of the Bruise

The air in the foyer turned instantly frigid as Julian came to a halt, sliding on his knees onto the marble floor beside his crying son. The sheer weight of his physical presence seemed to compress the room. He ignored Victoria completely, not even offering her a glance as she hovered beside him, hyperventilating and babbling frantic assurances.

Julian’s attention was entirely fixated on his head maid.

Martha Vance did not attempt to stand, nor did she retreat. She remained on her knees, her body trembling so violently that the stiff linen of her apron rustled like dry leaves in a winter gale. Tears, hot and continuous, streamed down her bruised face, tracing wet paths over the dark crimson swelling on her cheek and dripping onto her white collar.

Up close, the injury on Martha’s face was appalling. It was not the result of a slip, a fall, or an accidental bump against a piece of furniture. It was a clear, high-impact blunt force injury—a rectangular contusion with a distinct indentation near the top edge, precisely matching the size, weight, and shape of the heavy gold signet ring Victoria wore on her right hand.

Julian leaned closer, his broad shoulders blocking Victoria from the child. His voice, when he spoke, was not a shout. It was a low, vibrating baritone that sounded like grinding tectonic plates—a tone far more dangerous than any roar of anger.

"Martha," Julian said, his eyes scanning every millimeter of the welt on her cheek. "Look at me."

The old maid lifted her good eye, her chest heaving as she fought for breath. "Mr. Sterling..." she choked out, her voice a hollow, shattered whisper that barely carried over the baby's fading cries. "I swear... I swear on the memory of your late mother..."

"Tell me what happened," Julian commanded softly, his face inches from hers. "Do not omit a single word."

"She... she hurts the baby whenever you're away, Mr. Sterling," Martha wept, her raw hands still gripping the infant's feet gently. "Every time you leave for the city... every time you are in Washington or Silicon Valley... she comes into the nursery. She cannot stand the sight of him, sir. She calls him a curse. She calls him a rival for your fortune."

"You lying, senile old hag!" Victoria shrieked from behind them, dropping her knees onto the floor and reaching over Julian’s shoulder to grab his arm. "Julian, listen to me! She’s confused! She stumbled carrying him down the grand stairs! She dropped him onto the stone! When I tried to pull Leo away from her, she fell face-first into the doorframe! She’s inventing this madness to save herself from being fired!"

Martha shook her head slowly, a fresh wave of tears spilling over her swollen eyelid. "I tried to stand between them today, sir," the maid whispered, ignoring Victoria's screams. "I took the baby into my arms to bring him to my quarters... and she struck me. She knocked me to the floor, Mr. Sterling. And then she raised her hand to hit the boy while he lay defenseless."

Julian sat completely motionless on the checkered marble. The silence that fell over him was absolute, heavy, and terrifying.
