Chapter 8 - The Price of Treason

Julian opened the leather folder, sliding three thick documents across the mahogany desk. Beside them, he laid a heavy, polished black fountain pen.

"This is an unconditional annulment agreement," Julian stated flatly. "Along with a full confession of physical assault against Martha Vance, and an explicit waiver of all current and future claims against the Sterling estate."

Victoria pulled herself up from the rug, using the edge of the desk to steady her shaking legs. She glared at the white paper, her breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps.

"And if I refuse to sign?" she spat, her eyes flaring with one last, desperate ember of malice. "What if I walk out of this house right now and call the press? What if I tell every news outlet in the country that Julian Sterling keeps secret cameras in his home, uses surrogates like livestock, and forces his young wife into fake marriages? I will turn your precious company's stock into radioactive waste!"

Julian leaned forward, his dark eyes fixing hers with a force so absolute it felt physical.

"If you refuse to sign," Julian whispered, "the two federal prosecutors currently sitting in a black SUV at my gate will enter this room. The video footage you just witnessed—along with forty-eight hours of unedited high-definition recordings of your violence—will be submitted directly to the district attorney’s office."

He stepped out from behind the desk, standing inches from her.

"You will not be going to a luxury hotel, Victoria," Julian said, his voice dropping into a register that made the blood in her veins run cold. "You will be processed into a state correctional facility on charges of felony child endangerment, aggravated battery, and extortion. I will personally spend fifty million dollars ensuring that every legal appeal you attempt is crushed. You will spend the next fifteen years of your life in a six-by-eight concrete cell."

Victoria stared into his face. She searched for a hint of hesitation, a flicker of doubt, a grain of mercy. She found nothing. Julian Sterling was a man who eliminated corporate threats for a living, and she had placed herself directly in his crosshairs.

Her hands began to shake so violently she could barely keep her balance.

"The fifteen million in escrow..." she whimpered, her voice reduced to a broken squeak.

"Forfeited," Julian replied without a trace of emotion. "You leave this estate with the clothes on your back. Your personal accounts have already been frozen under the breach-of-contract clause. You have five minutes to sign those documents, or I signal the officers at the gate."

Victoria dropped her head. Tears of bitter rage and absolute defeat rained down onto the mahogany desk.

She picked up the heavy black fountain pen. Her fingers were trembling so severely that her signature jagged across the white paper, leaving dark ink splatters on the pristine sheets.

Victoria Sterling.

Victoria Sterling.

May you like

Victoria Sterling.

She dropped the pen, buried her face in her manicured hands, and let out a broken, hysterical sob that sounded like a wounded animal.
