Chapter 5 - The Glass House of Lies

Fifteen minutes later, the grand foyer was silent, but the atmosphere inside Ravencrest Estate had condensed into a toxic, suffocating storm. Outside, the torrential rain hammered against the floor-to-ceiling glass walls of the second-floor master study—a massive, vaulted room lined with thousands of leather-bound volumes, modern abstract art, and a massive mahogany executive desk overlooking the stormy estate grounds.
Julian stood near the cold stone fireplace, holding little Leo securely against his chest, rocking the infant with a practiced, rhythmic grace. The baby had finally stopped crying, resting his small head against the lapel of Julian’s charcoal suit jacket.
The heavy double oak doors of the study groaned open.
Victoria walked in. She had attempted to repair her shattered appearance in the bathroom: her blonde hair had been brushed back into a neat style, and powder had been applied to mask the red blotches on her skin. But no amount of cosmetics could hide the wild, frantic twitching of her eyelids or the subtle trembling of her fingers.
"Julian," she began, keeping her distance near the leather Chesterfield sofa, her voice tight and defensive. "We need to handle this rationally. You cannot allow a domestic dispute to ruin what we have built. If the board of directors hears that you are having a psychotic episode over a maid's lies—"
"The board of directors does not concern itself with domestic vermin," Julian interrupted softly, not even bothering to look at her as he continued to rock his son. "And as of ten minutes ago, the estate grounds have been completely locked down. I have dismissed the butler, the kitchen staff, and the groundkeepers for the next forty-eight hours. There is no one in this house, Victoria. Just you, me, Martha, and Leo."
Victoria’s breath hitched in her throat. Her eyes darted toward the high glass windows, watching the dark outlines of private security guards patrolling the perimeter in the driving rain.
"Why have you cleared the house, Julian?" she asked, her voice cracking. "What are you planning to do to me?"
May you like
Julian slowly walked over to his mahogany desk. He laid little Leo down inside a soft, velvet-lined bassinet positioned safely behind the desk. Then, with a slow, deliberate movement, he pressed a concealed silver button built into the polished wood of his desk frame.
From the high ceiling above, a motorized blackout shade descended over the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, plunging the room into shadow. A high-definition laser projector hummed to life, casting a stark, icy blue beam of light across the center of the study, illuminating a massive retractable screen that rolled down from the ceiling architecture.
