Chapter 10 - The Dawn of a New Order

By eight o'clock that evening, the storm outside had finally passed, leaving behind a crisp, clean night air that smelled of wet earth and rain-washed pine. The flashing red and blue lights of three federal law enforcement vehicles illuminated the wet parking lot as Marcus was loaded into the back of a black van, his face pale and ruined as he was driven away into the dark.

Inside the supermarket, the bright fluorescent lights burned warm and bright.

Amber stood at the front entrance, watching the cleanup crew reset register lane four. The old plastic name badge carrying her name was gone; in its place was a sleek, silver badge that read Amber Miller - Store Director.

Victoria Vance walked up beside her, wearing a dry, elegant charcoal trench coat. Her private limousine was idling beneath the front glass canopy.

"The federal prosecutors have already secured Marcus's confession," Victoria said quietly, looking out at the night. "The entire smuggling ring in three states is being dismantled as we speak."

Amber looked at the older woman, feeling a profound sense of gratitude mixed with awe. "What happens now?"

"Now," Victoria smiled, turning to shake Amber's hand firmly, "you run this store the way it should have been run from the beginning. With strength, with integrity, and with an open heart."

Victoria walked out through the automatic glass doors, stepping into the back seat of her luxury sedan. As the car pulled away into the damp night air, Amber turned back to the brightly lit aisles of her store.

She walked over to register lane four, picked up a fresh white carton of "Senior Nutritional Milk" from the shelf, and set it neatly on the belt, ready for the next person who might come in from the cold.
