Chapter 6 - The Rebuilding

Marcus stood frozen for three excruciating seconds, his chest heaving as he looked around the checkout area. The shoppers in line were staring at him with cold, unblinking contempt. Amber stood watching him quietly, showing neither malice nor triumph—only a quiet, solemn dignity.
Realizing he had lost everything in the span of two minutes, Marcus turned on his heel, his head hanging low, and shuffled hastily toward the back employee corridor, his footsteps hollow against the linoleum.
The silence that followed his departure was broken by a sudden, sharp clap from the middle-aged man in the maroon jacket. Within seconds, the rest of the queue joined in, a ripple of applause washing over register lane four.
Victoria ignored the crowd. She turned her full attention toward Amber.
"What is your name, child?" Victoria asked, her voice dropping the hard, corporate edge and returning to a warm, gentle tone.
"Amber," the girl whispered, still trying to process the dramatic shift in her reality. "Amber Miller."
"Well, Amber," Victoria smiled, reaching over the counter to pick up the plastic name badge Marcus had discarded. She held it out to the girl. "It seems this store is currently lacking a general manager. Someone who understands that rules without empathy are merely an excuse for cruelty."

Amber blinked, her breath catching in her throat. "Ma'am?"
"I am appointing you temporary store manager starting today, with a full permanent promotion upon completion of our corporate leadership seminar," Victoria announced plainly. "Your salary will be quadrupled, and Vance Capital will cover the full cost of your college tuition."
