Chapter 5 - The Execution

"Mrs. Vance... please," Marcus wheezed, placing a trembling hand over his heart, his face slick with a sudden sheen of cold sweat. "You have to understand... store security... shrinkage... we have strict corporate guidelines to prevent theft! I was only protecting the company's bottom line!"

"You weren't protecting the bottom line," Victoria corrected him calmly. "You were indulging a petty power fantasy at the expense of a girl who earns minimum wage."

She reached into her coat pocket once more and pulled out a sleek, gold-embossed business card, setting it gently onto the black conveyor belt.

"As of thirty seconds ago, the acquisition contract was signed by your board of directors in Chicago. Vance Capital now owns ninety-two percent of this corporation," Victoria stated, her voice carrying the unyielding finality of a judge passing sentence. "Which means your employment here is terminated. Effective immediately."

Marcus stared at the gold card on the belt as if it were a venomous snake. "You... you can't fire me! I've been with this company for twelve years! I have a pension! I have a contract!"

"Your contract contained a standard ethical misconduct clause," Victoria replied icy cold. "Which I have just personally documented on video via my lapel pin camera. You will receive no severance. You will receive no accrued bonus. Pack your desk, hand your keys to security, and vacate my building within ten minutes, or I will have you arrested for criminal trespass."
