Chapter 2 - The Price of Empathy

The camera cut to a tight close-up, focusing on the counter as Amber subtly pushed the white milk carton past the scanner divider, sliding it straight into the elderly woman's waiting, fragile hands.

The old woman gasped softly, her hands folding instinctively around the cold carton, cradling it against her chest as if it were a fragile bird. Her lower lip trembled, and two heavy tears spilled over her lashes, tracing clean tracks through the dust on her cheeks.

"I haven't had anything since yesterday," the old woman whispered, her voice choking on the words.

The raw truth of the statement seemed to freeze the surrounding air. For a fraction of a second, even the man in the maroon jacket stopped tapping his foot, shifting his eyes uncomfortably toward the floor.

Marcus, however, remained entirely unaffected. His ego, challenged in front of a dozen watching shoppers, flared into an ugly, dark crimson rage. His jaw clenched so tight the muscles along his neck stood out like wires. He took a step closer to Amber, pointing a thick, manicured finger straight at her face.

"That is insubordination, theft authorization, and a direct breach of contract," Marcus snarled, his voice ringing out across the checkout lanes with chilling finality. "Turn in your badge, you're fired."

Amber stood still beneath the harsh, cold glare of the fluorescent lights. The fear that usually accompanied the thought of losing her meager paycheck—the money that paid for her nightly soup and college textbooks—simply failed to materialize. Looking at the frail woman holding the milk, Amber felt only a quiet, crystalline clarity.

Slowly, deliberately, Amber reached up to her chest. She unclipped the plastic name badge carrying the name "Amber" in bold green letters, along with the brass register key hanging from her lanyard. She placed them onto the black rubber belt right in front of Marcus.

"I'd do it again," Amber said, her eyes meeting his with cold, unyielding resolve.
