Chapter 4 - The Predator Revealed

The old woman lowered the smartphone, tapping the glass once to end the call before slipping it back into her coat pocket. The ambient noise of the supermarket—the distant hum of freezer fans, the rain against the windowpane—seemed to drop away entirely, leaving an oppressive silence in lane four.
"Who... who are you?" Marcus stammered, his pompous demeanor collapsing like a house of cards.
"My name is Victoria Vance," she replied, her tone flat and devoid of emotion. "Chairwoman of Vance Global Capital."
A sharp gasp echoed from the man in the maroon jacket behind her in line. Vance Global Capital was a notorious corporate behemoth known for acquiring failing retail chains, restructuring their operational frameworks, and ruthlessly stripping toxic management from the top down.
"We have been reviewing the buyout of this supermarket franchise for six weeks," Victoria continued, taking a slow, deliberate step toward the register counter. "The financial ledgers showed promise, but spreadsheets do not reveal the soul of an enterprise. They do not tell me how a regional director trains his managers to treat human beings when they think no one of importance is watching."
She extended a finger toward the white milk carton resting on the counter. "I came into this branch disguised as an impoverished customer to test a simple hypothesis: whether this brand's culture was driven by basic human empathy or sociopathic compliance."

Marcus opened his mouth to speak, but his throat was so dry no sound emerged.
"You failed, Marcus," Victoria said softly, her eyes narrowing into cold slits. "You failed the audit before I even reached the register. I watched you ignore an elderly man who fell near aisle three. I watched you bark at an employee for taking a two-minute water break. And then I stood here and watched you fire a child for showing mercy."
