Chapter 8 - The Hidden Ledger

Victoria walked back to the desk, opened her leather briefcase, and pulled out a thick Manila folder stamped with a red CONFIDENTIAL seal. She slid it across the mahogany surface toward Amber.
"Open it," Victoria instructed.
Amber hesitated, then unsealed the folder. Inside were several glossy surveillance photos, bank transfer records, and police reports dating back three years.
In every photo, Marcus was standing in the store's rear loading bay late at night, exchanging unmarked wooden crates with men in dark, unmarked vans.
Amber gasped, her eyes scanning the financial documents attached to the photos. "He wasn't just enforcing store rules... he was stealing from the company?"
"Systematically," Victoria revealed, her voice dropping into a tense whisper. "Over two million dollars in high-end pharmaceuticals and infant formula have vanished from this region's distribution centers over the past thirty-six months. Marcus was the local bottleneck. He used his absurdly strict enforcement of minor store policies to keep his staff terrified, distracted, and quiet so no one would dare look at the loading dock logs."

Amber felt a cold pit form in her stomach. "And my four-dollar milk carton..."
"Was the catalyst," Victoria finished. "If you had backed down, if you had let him crush you, I would have assumed he had complete psychological control over this branch, and I would have brought the federal authorities in to raid the store tonight. But when you stood your ground, you gave me the opening I needed to strip his credentials legally before he could trigger a wipe of the store's internal servers."
