Chapter 2 - The Sound of Shattered Silence

Leo’s small fingers reached out toward the cold floor, his entire body convulsing with uncontrollable sobs as he reached for a single strand of pasta. The laughter around the table remained muted, a sinister background hum to his absolute humilation.
Suddenly, the heavy white double doors at the far end of the hall slammed open with a noise that echoed like a gunshot off the marble walls.
Standing in the doorway was Eleanor Sterling.
At thirty-two, Eleanor was the picture of razor-sharp corporate authority. Dressed in a tailored black suit with structured shoulders and a high-collared white shirt, she carried a heavy black leather briefcase. Her dark hair was pulled into a sleek pony tail, and her light eyes burned with a lethal, dormant intensity. She had just returned from a high-stakes three-day negotiation in New York, completely unaware of the trap her mother-in-law had laid in her absence.
Eleanor took in the scene in a fraction of a second: the spilled food, the silent, complacent family, her mother-in-law twisting her five-year-old son’s hair, and Leo weeping on his knees.
The heavy leather briefcase slipped from Eleanor’s hand, striking the floor with a dull thud.
For a terrifying beat, the air in the room seemed to freeze. Eleanor’s face didn't twist into tears; it hardened into a mask of pure, absolute vengeance. She moved before anyone at the table could react, her heels clicking against the stone in a fast, rhythmic march that sounded like a war drum.
She crossed the vast dining hall in six long strides. As Victoria turned her head to assert her dominance, Eleanor’s right hand shot out, grabbing Victoria’s champagne silk sleeve and violently twisting the elder woman’s arm away from Leo’s head.
Victoria stumbled backward, her pearl necklace swaying wildly as she nearly lost her footing on the polished stone. "Eleanor! How dare you—"
Eleanor didn't even look at Victoria. Her gaze snapped to the man sitting at the head of the table—Julian Sterling, her husband, Leo’s father.
Julian sat in his dark suit, a glass of expensive wine midway to his lips, his expression a cowardly mix of guilt and resignation.
"Don't touch my son!" Eleanor screamed, her voice vibrating with a primal, terrifying rage that shattered the polished etiquette of the room. She stepped up to Julian, her right hand swinging back and coming down across his face with a crack that sounded like a whip.

Julian’s head snapped to the side, his wine glass spilling onto his lap. "Eleanor, wait—"
"You watched her do this?" Eleanor’s voice choked with pure disgust as she glared at her husband. "He is FIVE!"
