Chapter 5 - The Deed of Sterling Manor

Eleanor walked steadily over to the doorway where her black leather briefcase lay on the floor. Without breaking her stride, she unzipped the front pocket and pulled out a thick document bound in a black leather folder.

She walked back to the center of the ruined room, stepping over shattered crystal and pools of wine, and slammed the folder down onto a dry section of the overturned table’s stone base.

The slap of the paper rang out in the quiet room.

"What is that?" Victoria demanded, her voice shaking, though she tried desperately to maintain her regal posture. "More of your theatrics?"

"Read it, Victoria," Eleanor said, pointing a single, firm finger at the document. "Or have your high-priced lawyers read it to you."

Julian picked up the folder with trembling hands, wiping grease from his fingers. He opened the first page, his eyes scanning the official seals, the notary stamps, and the signatures at the bottom. As he read, the little color remaining in his face drained entirely.

"This... this can't be," Julian stammered, his voice dropping into an incredulous whisper. "The foreclosure notices... the debt restructuring... it's all executed."

"What are you talking about, Julian?" Victoria snapped, stepping closer, her champagne dress stained with dark wine. "Speak up!"

"Mother..." Julian looked up, his eyes wide with absolute dread. "The manor... the estate grounds... the family accounts in Switzerland... they were leveraged to secure the offshore expansion three years ago. The holding company that bought out the defaulted debt yesterday..."

Julian looked at Eleanor, his lips trembling. "...it's hers. It's entirely in her name."

Victoria grabbed the paper from Julian’s hands, her eyes scanning the legal language frantically. Her hands began to shake violently. The Sterling family hadn't been living on their vast ancestral fortune; they had been living on borrowed time, completely unaware that Eleanor had spent the last thirty-six months quietly buying up every fraction of their defaulted debt through her private firm.

"You... you stole my family's legacy!" Victoria gasped, clutching her chest, her voice cracking with pure desperation.

"I didn't steal anything, Victoria," Eleanor said, her voice cold as ice. "I bought it. Every brick. Every chair. Every strand of pearls around your neck."

Heavy footsteps echoed from the entrance hall. Four uniformed police officers, accompanied by a court-appointed sheriff, walked into the dining room. They stopped near the entrance, taking in the scene of destruction with professional detachment.

Eleanor turned to Victoria, her eyes burning with absolute, uncompromising victory.

"This house belongs to us," Eleanor said clearly, her voice reaching every corner of the shattered room. "Get out of my son's house."
