Chapter 8 - The Cornered Matriarch

In a private suite at the Grand Regency Hotel downtown, Victoria Sterling sat near the window, staring out at the city skyline. The champagne silk dress was gone, replaced by a simple dark suit, but her pride remained unbroken, warped into a bitter, dangerous obsession.

Julian paced back and forth across the plush carpet, a glass of scotch shaking in his hand.

"Our lawyers said there's nothing they can do, Mother!" Julian panicked, his voice high and unstable. "The debt transfers were completely legal! Eleanor owned ninety percent of the secondary mortgages! She bought them through three different subsidiaries over three years! We signed those restructuring documents ourselves!"

"Silence, Julian!" Victoria snapped, her voice like a whip. "You coward! You stood there and let that common woman slap you! You let her take our home!"

"What was I supposed to do?" Julian shouted back, slamming his glass down on the table. "She had the police with her! She had the sheriff! We were living on her money, Mother! The Sterling name is broke!"

Victoria turned her head slowly, her dark eyes narrowing into slits. "The Sterling name is never broke as long as I am alive. Eleanor thinks she has won because she has paper and deeds. But she forgets who built that empire."

Victoria stood up, stepping over to her leather handbag. She pulled out a small, encrypted burner phone—a device she had kept hidden from the family for emergency financial transactions.

"What are you doing?" Julian asked nervously.

"Eleanor bought our debt," Victoria said, her painted lips curling into a sinister smile. "But she didn't buy the secrets hidden in the manor's private vault. Secrets that can destroy her firm, her reputation, and send her to prison for the rest of her life."

"What secrets?"

Victoria looked at her son with absolute contempt. "You think your father built this fortune through honest trading? There are ledgers in the floor vault beneath the study, Julian. Ledgers that prove Eleanor's late father was complicit in the offshore transfers twenty years ago. If those documents leak to the press, her firm collapses overnight."
