Chapter 12 - The Reckoning

The psychological blow was more devastating than any physical toxin.
Arthur stared at the glowing blue screen, his mouth working silently like a fish pulled from water. The realization that he had been completely outplayed, humiliated, and trapped by the very woman he had viewed as a biological vessel broke the last remaining threads of his sanity.
"You..." Arthur choked out, his face turning a dark, mottled red. "You... parasite!"
He raised his silver-topped cane, swinging it violently toward Clara’s head in a final, pathetic act of impotent rage.
Julian moved with lightning speed. He sprang from the settee, stepping between Arthur and Clara, catching the heavy silver cane in his bare right hand. With one powerful twist, Julian ripped the cane out of his father's grip and tossed it across the marble floor, where it clattered noisily against the base of the staircase.
Julian grabbed Arthur by his lapels, shoving the dying old man backward into one of the heavy velvet armchairs.
"Touch my wife again," Julian whispered into Arthur’s pale, sweat-streaked face, "and I won't let the law take care of you."
Sirens suddenly pierced the night air. High-pitched blares echoed through the fog, growing louder and louder as a dozen law enforcement vehicles—a mix of state police cruisers and unmarked black federal SUVs—swept up the long cobblestone driveway, their red and blue lights flashing violently against the grand bay windows of the estate.
Martha let out a piercing screech, falling to her knees on the marble floor, burying her face in her hands as she began to sob hysterically. Arthur sat motionless in the velvet chair, his eyes wide and vacant, staring blankly ahead as his left hand twitched uncontrollably—the Huntington's tremors taking full, violent control of his body now that his psychological defense mechanism had collapsed.
The heavy oak front doors were kicked open, and armed federal agents in tactical gear flooded into the foyer, their weapons trained on Arthur and Martha.
"Federal agents! Don't move!" a harsh voice boomed through the hall.
A tall, sharp-eyed man in a dark suit walked in behind the tactical team, holding a gold badge in one hand and a thick stack of federal arrest warrants in the other.

"Arthur Sterling, Martha Sterling," Special Agent Miller announced, his voice devoid of warmth. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit human trafficking, illegal biological experimentation, extortion, and attempted murder. Take them into custody."
As the tactical team moved in to place the steel handcuffs around Arthur’s shaking wrists, Julian took Clara’s hand, pulling her and the sleeping Lily into his arms. They walked past the fallen patriarch, past the crying matriarch, and stepped out through the open doors into the fresh, cool night air.
