Chapter 4 - The Safe House

The rain began to fall forty minutes into the drive, heavy drops slapping against the windshield of Julian’s black sedan. The windshield wipers clicked in a steady, hypnotic rhythm: thump-thump, thump-thump.

Inside the car, nobody spoke. In the backseat, Lily had finally succumbed to exhaustion, her little head slumping sideways against the plush fabric of her car seat, her breathing soft and rhythmic. Clara sat in the front passenger seat, staring out at the blurred green trees whipping past along the highway. She held a cold bottle of water against her bruised left cheek. The red swelling had darkened into a deep, painful purple.

Julian kept both hands gripped tightly on the steering wheel at ten-and-two. His knuckles were bone-white.

"Where are we going?" Clara asked, her voice raspy and dry. It was the first time she had spoken since they cleared the estate gates.

"My old apartment in the city," Julian said, his eyes glued to the dark asphalt ahead. "The lease is still under my personal name, not the corporate entity. My parents don't have the keys, and the building has twenty-four-hour security. You'll be safe there."

Clara turned her head to look at him. The dim dashboard lights cast sharp shadows across his face, accentuating the hard, unfamiliar lines around his mouth. "Julian... what did you mean back there? When you asked them about the medical records?"

Julian’s grip on the wheel tightened even further. He took a slow, ragged breath before answering. "Three days ago, I got a call from a colleague at the university lab. He said my father had ordered a full-genomic sequencing panel on Lily using a private lab in Switzerland. He used a company credit line I monitor."

Clara’s breath hitched. "A genomic panel? Why? Lily is completely healthy! Aside from the mild asthma—"

"That's what they told us," Julian interrupted, his tone turning icy. "They told us she had asthma so they could administer those monthly 'treatments' at the private clinic in Oakridge. The clinic owned by Arthur’s former college roommate."

Clara felt a wave of icy horror wash through her gut. She remembered those clinic visits. Arthur had insisted on accompanying Clara every single time, claiming he just wanted to ensure his granddaughter received the finest pediatric care money could buy. Every time, they would take Lily into a back room for "inhalation therapy" while Clara was kept in the waiting room with a cup of tea offered by the smiling receptionist.

"What were they giving her, Julian?" Clara’s voice cracked with rising panic. She unbuckled her seatbelt slightly, turning in her seat to check on the sleeping toddler behind her. "What did they do to my baby?!"

"I don't know yet," Julian said, his voice breaking for the first time. "I intercepted the lab report this morning on my way to the office. That's why I came back early. Clara... the report didn't just contain Lily's DNA profile. It contained yours."

Clara stared at him, her mind racing through her knowledge of human genetics and medical ethics, trying to bridge the nightmare gap. "My DNA? How did they get my DNA?"

"The glass of water you drank at the clinic every month," Julian said, turning his head briefly to meet her eyes. His expression was tormented. "They weren't just treating Lily, Clara. They were monitoring you. And the report concluded with a single line from Arthur's private physician: Subject exhibits required cellular compatibility. Proceed to Phase Two."

A deafening silence fell over the car, broken only by the sound of rain hammering against the roof.
