Chapter 6 - The Web Closes

The realization hit Clara with the force of a physical blow. Her entire marriage, the romance that had felt like a fairy tale, the warm invitations to move into the Sterling estate after Lily’s birth—it had all been a dark, calculated cattle drive. She hadn't been welcomed into a family; she had been brought to a slaughterhouse.
"Did you know?" Clara asked, her voice dropping into an eerily quiet, flat register. She looked at Julian, her eyes searching his face for any sign of deception. "Julian... tell me the truth. Did you know about this when you asked me to marry you?"
Julian dropped to his knees in front of her, grabbing her hands. His tears fell freely onto her lap. "Swear to God on Lily’s life, Clara, I had no idea! I thought my father was just a domineering, arrogant bastard who wanted to control my career! I didn't know about the lab, I didn't know about the harvesting plan! I fell in love with you at that gala because you were real, because you were everything my family wasn't!"
Clara looked deep into his blue eyes. She saw the same horror reflected in them that was burning inside her own soul. He wasn't the mastermind; he was the bait.
"Then why Lily?" Clara asked, her heart breaking further. "If they wanted my tissue, why were they doing things to Lily?!"
Julian squeezed her hands tightly. "Because a toddler’s stem cells are exceptionally plastic. They don't carry the immune resistance of an adult organ. Arthur didn't just want your bone marrow to prolong his life, Clara. He wanted to use Lily’s cord blood and cellular tissue, which they’ve been slowly harvesting during those monthly 'asthma treatments,' to create a customized, self-renewing therapy line."
"They were farming our daughter," Clara whispered, the words tasting like ash in her mouth. "They were slowly draining her under the guise of medicine."
"Yes," Julian choked out. "And today... today was supposed to be the day they took you away."
"What do you mean?"
Julian pulled another document from the pile. It was a legal petition for emergency psychiatric hold, signed by a corrupt judge on the Sterling payroll, alongside a medical transport order.
"Arthur was going to have you declared mentally unfit today," Julian revealed. "They were going to use the bruise on your face—which Arthur caused this morning—as 'evidence' of self-harm during a psychotic break. The transport van was scheduled to arrive at the estate at eleven o'clock. They were going to commit you to their private sanitarium in upstate New York. Once you were inside, you would have disappeared into the system forever, while Arthur took full legal guardianship of Lily."
Clara’s breath came in fast, shallow gasps. The timing was terrifyingly narrow. If Martha hadn't lost her temper over the breakfast table, if Julian hadn't come home an hour early to intercept the lab reports, Clara would already be in the back of a padded van, sedated and helpless.
Suddenly, the silent apartment was pierced by the sharp, buzzing vibration of Julian’s cell phone resting on the glass table.
The caller ID showed no name—only a string of encrypted digits.
Julian looked at Clara. She gave him a stiff, terrifyingly calm nod.

Julian reached out, swiped the screen, and placed the phone on speaker.
"Julian," Arthur’s deep, cold voice filled the living room, devoid of any background noise. "I see you’ve taken my property to your apartment on 5th Street."
